Contemporary art gallery in the East end of Glasgow

We’re very pleased to announce VAN, an upcoming solo exhibition by Zayd Menk 🚙

Opening Friday 18th September, 5-8pm for Glasgow Art Weekend Glasgow Art Map ! The exhibition continues until 7th November, open Friday and Saturday, 12-5pm and by appointment.

For VAN, Menk works with a decommissioned vehicle, intercepted on its way to scrap. Three hundred years ago on land the fastest speed we could go was the speed of a horse; three hundred years before that, and before that, and before that… the speed of a horse. A message could not outrun its messenger. This exhibition considers speed, arrest, progress and its obsessions. Fixed and frightened forms rebelling against the life they have been subjected to.

Zayd Menk (b. 2000, Harare) works across sculpture and installation. His practice dissects technology as a hyperobject, the omnipresent force that defines our era, through systems and structures built from found objects and salvaged parts, components hardware-hacked into ways they were never intended. His work carries a preoccupation with progress, obsolescence, agency, and the right to repair; with the opaque operations that govern the systems we exist within.

Recent exhibitions include: SCAR TISSUE, Ginny on Fredrick, London (2026); The Bed Sitting Room, Lomex, New York (2026); and New Contemporaries, Camden Art Centre, London (2024).

We’re beyond excited to announce our proposal to take on a 25 year lease of the former Scotland Street School Museum through Glasgow City Council’s People Make Glasgow Communities programme! 🎉

Closed to the public since 2020, we are proposing that the building would be brought back into full public use as a creative hub for Glasgow. The ground floor would house a café, a contemporary art gallery, an artist residency space and a screening room, while the upper floors would provide artist studios and space for creative businesses.

We will retain and enhance as much of the building’s original interior and character as possible, including dedicating space to telling the story of the school and Mackintosh’s architecture.

Subject to the lease being agreed, we hope to begin works in 2027, with a view to opening the building to the public in 2028. You can read our full PMGC proposal online.

We want to hear from people who know and care about the building before we finalise our plans. This survey takes about 8–10 minutes to complete. Your answers will help shape the final plans we develop and will also form part of our PMGC application. A camera lingers on a woman as she drifts into sudden states of stillness and sleep, brought about by cataplectic episodes. Through an intimate correspondence, stories of mysterious and subterranean creatures emerge – tracing her own animal attunement around a felt absence

The title, Useful Creature, is taken from a poem by Lotte L.S. written in response to an earlier iteration of this work shown at Western Front, Vancouver in 2025.
