Looking Back at Our Open Day Sunday | Community, Tea & Remembrance. What a wonderful, productive afternoon we had welcoming everyone to our Open Day on Sunday 13th September 2026.

Visitors were popping in constantly throughout the afternoon—sharing local memories, exploring the archives, and stopping for a fresh brew and a chat. The kettle was on all day, and in a truly heart-warming gesture, one lovely visitor who had cycled quite a distance specially to join us treated the whole room to an incredible batch of home-baked cookies.

It was fantastic to have our dedicated team of volunteers gathered together in one room. Alongside discussing ongoing research, we spent time revisiting our Last Post newsletter issue and sharing war remembrance poetry, including Helen-Marie’s moving collection, Spirit of Remembrance.

Moments like these—warm tea, home baking, generous community spirit, and shared reflection—are what breathe real life into our work. A massive thank you to all our brilliant volunteers and to everyone who pedalled, walked, or dropped in to make the day so special!

We were delighted to join the Family History Society for their celebration in the historic old school hall at Clarence House on 14 September.

As Robin Jenkins reflected on the day: "These occasions are always enjoyable. We meet old friends and make new contacts, and it is a wonderful opportunity for us to share a small sample of the memorials we care for and to promote our own work of preserving and protecting war memorials. In this case, it was particularly pleasing to see the two war memorials from the City Boys’ School and to hear Brian Screaton’s account of how they were rescued from the boiler room of the school’s new site and returned to their place of honour (and safety)."

As Denis Kenyon noted: "An additional pleasure is the making of new contacts with fresh information about gaps in our knowledge, giving our researchers the chance to put substance behind the names on our war memorials."

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to visit our stand, share family memories, and support our continuing mission across Leicestershire and Rutland!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for Heritage Open Days at All Saints Church! 🏛️🎖️
​Denis Kenyon shares his reflections after a wonderful turnout on Saturday, where 36 visitors gathered to explore the archives of the At Risk War Memorials Project (ARWMP) and reconnect with Leicestershire’s history.

​During the afternoon, Denis delivered two special talks:

​The Origin Story of ARWMP: How and why the project was established to rescue forgotten and at-risk memorials from closed chapels, schools, and factories across our region.

​"A Tiger in the Snows of Russia 1918–1919": The extraordinary account of a Hallaton soldier who earned the Military Medal (MM) serving with the Leicestershire Regiment (The Tigers), received a commission to The Green Howards, and went on to be awarded the Military Cross (MC) during operations in northern Russia.

​Our gratitude goes out to everyone who took the time to visit, ask questions, and help keep these local stories alive. Every memorial saved represents a family, a community, and a legacy worth remembering.

On Saturday 12th we will be opening at 10.00 am At about noon, Denis Kenyon will be giving two talks. The first as to why and how ARWMP started and a second longer one about a Hallaton man who won an MM with the Tigers and then an MC with The Green Howards fighting the Bolsheviks in northern Russia in late 1918 and 1919. "A Tiger in the snows of Russia 1918-1919”

We will also be open Sunday 13th from 10am.

The Open Day is today! And here is a message from Denis:

There are three excellent reasons for you to come, however many times you have been previously.

Reason 1 - approx. 12 noon - “Three before Breakfast” - the loss of the armoured cruisers Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy on September 22nd 1914. talk by Robin Jenkins.

Reason 2 - approx. 2.00 pm - : "Seaman Walter Waudby (on Humberstone Congregational War Memorial) and his shipmates of the cruiser squadron". talk by Robin Jenkins.

Reason 3 - We have taken into care on loan, a most unusual WW2 memorial. A flattened H with photos of two Nutting brothers in Mounted Guard Order of Royal Scots Greys and Royal Horse Guards. A real gem and researcher wanted.

Alongside our open exhibition archives, we are hosting two exclusive, gripping short presentations by renowned project director Robin Jenkins. If you are looking for an incredible piece of local insight for your weekend, don’t miss these scheduled slots:

🔔 A Roller-Coaster Triumph for Loughborough's History! As communities across the country celebrate the UK Festival of Archaeology this month, we are looking at an incredible preservation story right on our doorstep in Leicestershire. In the brand-new July issue of our newsletter, Debbie Taylor recounts the extraordinary hurdles faced by the volunteer team at the Carillon War Memorial Museum in Loughborough. During a major structural refurbishment of the iconic tower, strict building regulations suddenly restricted public access to the upper floors—completely throwing their original three-floor exhibition plans into jeopardy. Instead of backing down, a small, passionate team of military and local history volunteers pivoted seamlessly. Working alongside Leicester-based design company Vertigo Creative, they completely reimagined and transformed their limited 20x20-foot ground floor into a powerful, immersive exhibit centred entirely on "The Human Cost" of wartime sacrifice. From using ingenious technology to bring century-old, blurry photographic portraits back into startlingly sharp focus, to a hilarious session where they had to saw the feet off a mannequin in a German uniform to fit authentic leather knee-high boots—this was a true labour of love!
