"Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche was the only documented black passenger on the Titanic's maiden voyage.

But who was he? And what doomed twists of fate led the 25-year-old and his family to the supposedly "unsinkable" White Star Line ship?"

Find out more about the man central to the historical drama coming to Museum of Liverpool this weekend:

Joseph Laroche was 25 when he became one of the victims of the Titanic disaster in 1912.

This Black History Month, don't miss ‘Laroche’ a historical drama that explores the remarkable true story of Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche, the only known Black passenger aboard RMS Titanic.

This powerful performance traces the life of the Haitian-born engineer, navigating race, class, love and belonging in early twentieth-century Europe.

Written and directed by Dr Carlette Norwood, the play was inspired by a visit to our very own Titanic gallery, where Dr Norwood was inspired to learn more and through her research discovered the extraordinary story of Laroche and a legacy that deserves to be remembered:

“This is more than just a historical drama; it’s a reclamation of a piece of Black history that has been lost in time.”

It was 311 years ago on this day that Liverpool’s Old Dock - originally known as Thomas Steers' Dock - opened as the world's first commercial wet dock, a significant new chapter for the city, that changes its fortune forever.

It was also on this date in 1826 that the last vessel left the Old Dock, which had, in a relatively short space of time, become too small for the growing size of shipping using Liverpool's busy port ⚓🏛️

Today the Old Dock is a major tourist attraction hidden beneath . So much so it was recently positioned in the top 10% of must-see attractions worldwide on , thanks to the success of its popular visitor tours 🎉

180 years of Royal Albert Dock Liverpool 🎈🎂 As our home since the mid 80s we are delighted to join the celebrations.

📰 We love this image of Prince Albert at the opening of the Albert Dock on 30 July 1846, published in Pictorial Times, along with the following description:

"As the Prince embarked on board the Royal Yacht, the William Fisher, laden with a cargo of Brazilian produce, became the first vessel to enter the docks, amidst the most enthusiastic cheering and firing of guns."

📸 Join the celebrations this summer, when our façade is transformed into a giant open-air gallery, and a selection of images of the dock by brilliant Liverpool photographer, Mark McNulty Photographer, will be projected nightly from 9:45pm–11pm.

And you can be a part of the celebrations by sharing your favourite memories of the dock. Whether it's a family day out from years ago or a recent selfie on the waterfront, your photos could become part of a permanent digital memory book and a special Dock Shorts projection this September.
