Presented in its original Jugendstil marquetry frame. 19.5 by 15 cms image. 26.5 by 22.5 cms. Framed overall. Some slight time discolouration and foxing to no real detriment.

fine art nouveau alabaster sculpture in non finito style dateable to the late 19th century, attributable to the Italian sculptor A. Gennai. A portrait of the Poetess Sappho. 38.5 cms high. 34.5 cms wide. 13.5 cms deep. Some minor edge chipping and paint loss to wreath to no detriment.

Sappho born Ca.615 B.C. on the Island of Le**os was greatly revered as a poetess, her poetry focuses on the personification of love, affection, and creativity. Her rythmic style was often performed accompanied by music and dance, giving her the reputation for being the Divine Inspiration to the Muses.
