What a find!

During the Fossil Festival weekend, Sophie, visiting from Wales found this huge Temnodontosaurus vertebra on the beach, identified on the spot by one of the Lyme Regis Museum Walk Guides, Dan.

Temnodontosaurus was a giant ichthyosaur that swam these very seas around 200 million years ago, and finds of this size are a genuinely exciting moment, even for experienced fossil hunters!

What a wonderfully timely discovery to make during a weekend dedicated to celebrating exactly these kind of remarkable discoveries! It's the perfect reminder that the Jurassic Coast is still revealing its secrets every single day.

Special reduced entry prices for the Fossil Festival today!

A reminder that during the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival on 13th & 14th June, children will go for FREE at Lyme Regis Museum and there will be a reduced entry price of £2 for adults.

Explore the world-famous Geology Gallery, home to incredible fossils from the Jurassic Coast, including spectacular marine reptiles and fascinating prehistoric finds. Learn about the life and work of Mary Anning, whose discoveries changed our understanding of the ancient world! Mary Anning changed science forever, but what was her world actually like?

Join Dr Tom Sharpe this Saturday at the Marine Theatre for 'Mary Anning's World', a fascinating look at how Mary carved out a unique place for herself in the emerging science of palaeontology in the early 19th century.

Two cracking finds on our fossil walks this week!

David Myrtle spotted a fantastic echinoid - a fossilised sea urchin from the Jurassic seas that once covered this coastline. And another lucky walker found a piece of crinoid - the fossilised stem of a sea lily, another unusual find for visitors!

Both brilliant examples of the incredible marine life preserved right here on our doorstep. The Jurassic Coast never disappoints!

Visitor Esther found these wonderful ichthyosaur vertebrae, some of which are articulated, on the beach at the weekend and brought them to us here at the museum for identification.

Articulated vertebrae like these are a genuinely special find, meaning the bones are still in their original position just as they were when the creature died over 180 million years ago.

Mary Anning herself began her fossil hunting life on these very shores and it's wonderful to see that spirit of curiosity and discovery alive and well today. Well done Esther - we think you might have the fossil hunting bug for life!
