If you think the exterior 'before and after' photos are impressive, wait until you see the inside of the house!

Elizabeth Gaskell's House before restoration and in August 2026.

Before its restoration the distinctive pink colour meant that the House was nicknamed 'the Pink House' locally. We still get visitors today who remember when it was student accommodation for the University of Manchester International Society.

In 1998 Manchester Historic Buildings Trust was established with the main aim of saving this Grade II* listed building. After a long campaign, led by Janet Allan MBE, the Trust acquired the freehold in 2004. Their first priority was to make the House safe, by repairing the exterior and replacing the roof. In 2012 the Trust was given a substantial The National Lottery Heritage Fund grant. This, with other generous donations, enabled the Trust to complete the restoration.

Elizabeth Gaskell's House is open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. (and other days for private tours and school groups)

The House continues to be run by the independent charity and receives no government funding, relying on income from admissions, events, room hires and Tea Room sales, as well as donations, to keep the House open to the public. By visiting the House you can contribute towards preserving a vital part of Manchester’s Literary Heritage.

112 years ago this month, the Alien Registrations Act was passed at the onset of the First World War, marking the beginning of modern Alien Registers which tracked the arrival, personal details, and potential departure of foreign nationals, formally referred to as 'Aliens'.

The GMP Museum is proud to hold one of the country's largest remaining collections of Alien Registers, which are used today to help people track down when and how their ancestors arrived in the UK.

To mark this anniversary, the museum is taking a brief look back at the history of the registers, including a guide on how you can access and use our collection of Alien Registers for your own research.

Join us on Sunday 30th August as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the start of Stockport's electric tramway network.

Opened on 26th August 1901, the electric trams served Stockport for half a century, with the final services operating in August 1951, being the last traditional trams in operation in Greater Manchester.

A full range of events will take place at our Middleton Road tram museum, with tram No.5 on display - one of the original trams from 1901 and the only surviving Stockport tramcar in the world. We'll also have an extra-special display of classic Stockport buses, courtesy of our friends at the Greater Manchester Transport Society, including one of those used to replace the trams in 1951.

A free vintage bus service will run at half hourly intervals between Heaton Park Tramway and the Museum of Transport, alongside a series of "tram replacement" heritage bus trips to Middleton and Blackley from our tramway museum at 11:30, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00.

If that wasn't enough, we'll have a full lineup of Stockport trams in model form, courtesy of renowned tramway modellers Ashley Best and Greg Marsden, alongside a showcase of images and artifacts from our archives, many of which have never been shown in public before.

Event takes place Sunday 30th August, 11:00-16:30. Please note that our heritage trams will not be in operation during this event.
