Greater Manchester Police Museum has put together a special exhibition to commemorate the 30th anniversary in one of Manchester's defining moments-go an see it for free and add your own memories of that day. More never-seen before information below👇

30 years ago today, at around 9:20am on a Saturday morning, a Ford Cargo lorry was parked at the corner of Corporation Street and Market Street in the heart of central Manchester. This is the beginning of one of the defining events in Manchester’s recent history.

Inside the lorry was a bomb which would become the largest ever detonated in the UK in peacetime and was set to change the lives of thousands and ultimately lead to the reinvention of Manchester’s iconic retail district, including the Arndale centre, Printworks, and the Corn Exchange.

During the World Cup of 1966, Lymm played host to a footballing legend and national team and although they didn't win the trophy that year (!) they left a big impression on the town which is highlighted in a special exhibition showing never-seen-before photos and memories at Lymm Heritage Centre.

Greater Manchester Police Museum commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Manchester bombing with a special temporary exhibition-free to view during museum opening hours. Find out more about this major event in our history from Tuesday 9th.

New Temporary Gallery Opens Next Week, Tuesday 9th June!

The 15th June will be the 30th Anniversary of the 1996 Manchester bombing, and to mark this important date the museum is opening a new temporary gallery for the public to experience.

The gallery uses original newspapers, police photographs, archived police briefs, video interviews of GMP officers, and an annotated map to explore the events of the 1996 Manchester bombing, how the police and emergency services handled the crisis, and how ultimately the devastation led to the reinvention of Manchester's now-iconic city centre.

If you are interested in viewing the gallery, please come and visit us. No need to book, and entry is free. We are open every Tuesday from 10:30am to 4pm, last admissions are at 3pm.
