Meet the Maker | Kathryn Williams

This Early Summer, multi-award winning and Mercury Prize nominated singer-songwriter, author and artist Kathryn Williams joins the gallery with her very first solo North East exhibition 'Striking Image'.

Her collection of portraits on matchboxes documents artists, writers and faces she’s met on tour, evocative of the opulent miniatures of the courts of Henry VIII and Francis I in the 1500s.

We sat down with Kathryn to find out more about 'Striking Image'. Read more on our blog bit.ly/4wXu9no

Folk Stories

Earlier this month, we welcomed visitors into the gallery for a later opening, as part of The Late Shows, shaped by folk traditions, storytelling and shared experience.

Set alongside the launch of our new Early Summer collections, the evening brought together artists, musicians, and visitors for a programme that unfolded across the gallery.

We’ve reflected on the evening on our blog. Read more bit.ly/4tO0OsO

We're pleased to announce Hannah Kelly has been selected for The Biscuit Factory Foundation's Spring Artist Grant 2026.

Hannah Kelly also known as littlebookofdoodles is an artist based in the North East of England in Sunderland. Since graduating in 2023 with a BA Hons in Fine Art Sculpture from UAL Camberwell, Hannah has been working freelance in ceramics and light art.

Within her practice she works across a wide range of mediums with a keen interest in narratives, patterns, surfaces and recycling waste materials such as plastics or fabrics to create art.

Hannah will be using the grant to invest in pottery wheels, clay and tools to run ceramics workshops.

Due to administrative changes, the structure of the grant scheme will be updated. While the total funding amount will remain the same, grants will now be awarded twice a year -once in Summer and once in Winter. In each round, we will support four recipients: two visual artists, one musician, and one performer.

New Headline Exhibition | 'Still/Life' by Jo Sharpe

This exhibition brings together a series of still life works informed by the language of folk art with its honest forms and enduring connection to place. Brushstrokes echo the rhythm of hand-stitching; colour palettes are drawn from hedgerows, chalk paths and sun-warmed earth.

Rooted in craft and shaped by the hand, these works celebrate the textures of early summer and the rituals of home. They are a study in restraint and reverence: objects and nature observed slowly, painted thoughtfully, and offered as quiet companions for everyday life.
