The Biscuit Factory is the UK’s largest art, craft & design gallery set in the heart of Newcastle’s cultural quarter. Housed in a former Victorian warehouse, our beautiful gallery spaces are set over two floors and display a range of exciting contemporary fine art, sculpture, original prints and jewellery, quality craftsmanship and design led homewares. The Biscuit Factory hosts four major exhibitions a year, representing the work of around 250 artists each season, so there is always something new to see every time you visit. Modern Classics | Opening at Ad Gefrin 23 October 2026

For our inaugural exhibtion in Northumberland, The Biscuit Factory presents a three painterly collections that explore light and atmosphere, the everyday and the elemental. Contemporary works rooted in traditional techniques that provide an essence of the subject; capturing a mood, a moment, a memory.

Here, we share a sample of the forthcoming collections from featuring artists Paula Dunn, Angelo Murphy, and Garry Courtnell.

Join us for the opening on Friday 23 October, with a Q&A with Paula Dunn: an intimate conversation over coffee with the artist about her process, practice, and inspiration.

In this drop-in talk, printmaker Eric Gaskell will talk through and discuss the various processes he uses, the processes he doesn’t and the ideas and myths behind many of his works, as well as printmaking in general. Choosing art for your home should be a personal and enjoyable experience, and even more so when something is created especially for you. This Autumn, artist Lily Greenwood has opened her books to do just that, with limited commission slots available to create bespoke artwork.

Commissioning can sound a little daunting, but it's a gateway to creating a truly unique collection of art to personalise your home with considered, handcrafted pieces. Our team will walk you through the process, advising and liaising along the way.

As Lily is an experienced commission artist, with collections that frequently sell out, this is an ideal opportunity for art lovers who are interested in having a bespoke piece created. Inspired by ‘multitudes in nature’, artist Lily Greewood creates distinctive original artwork that aims to capture the flow of multitudes; shoals of Koi fish, flocks of birds and butterflies. Lily’s approach employs an element of collage; using her own hand-drawn and painted studies that are reproduced and carefully layered into each larger piece.

In Conversation with Paula Dunn | 23 October

Join us at Ad Gefrin for In Conversation With Paula Dunn to mark the opening of Modern Classics, our new exhibition in partnership with the Northumberland-based distillery and the first of a new programme of exhibitions, conversations and gatherings.

During this special event, Paula will share more about her work, creative process and inspiration, offering an opportunity to look beyond the finished pieces and discover more about the craft and ideas behind them. Paula will also sign copies of her book ‘Atmospheric Landscapes’ - a practical book which focuses on the process for creating beautiful paintings with depth and atmosphere.

Paula Dunn is one of three artists featured in Modern Classics, alongside Angelo Murphy and Garry Courtnell. The exhibition explores light and atmosphere, the everyday and the elemental, bringing contemporary works rooted in traditional techniques to Ad Gefrin.
