Testing out different pens for handwriting a sketchbook project.

The first is a Sheaffer Fountain Pen.

The second is a calligraphy pen.

The third is a Micron 05 with archival ink.

Forth is a fine nib drawing pen.

I’ve used Bombay Vandyke Brown ink.

Bamburgh Castle, A Winter Sunrise

This started out as a demonstration/talk I was giving about the work I do in prisons.

One of the “In Cell” projects that many of the prisoners do is “Seascapes in Watercolour”.

Bamburgh Castle is one of the subjects that they paint if they follow the step by step instructions.

My grandson Harry is doing a project about Stonehenge at school. He asked me if I’d help him do a watercolour.

I suggested we did a scene similar to the Bamburgh Castle watercolour lesson I did for his class earlier in the year.

He’s made a decent job.

Today I’m celebrating 42 years in business.

My paintings have taken me from Ponteland to Oman with lots of places in between.

The sketchbooks help to document our travels as well as some of these press cuttings.

Now Susan and I are enjoying living and working from this old farmhouse in Ponteland.

My handmade leather bound sketchbooks are a great way of recording our travels.

There’s been times that one of these sketches has been commissioned as a studio painting for a client.

I often go through them and reminisce about our travels.

In 2004 I was invited to have an exhibition in a small Italian town called Marostica so we travelled to the Veneto in the autumn to make arrangements.

It was just starting to get light when we arrived in Marostica, the sun warming the walls of Castello Superiore. I painted a small sketchbook watercolour of the castle from the car park then made arrangements for the exhibition to take place the following November.

We returned to the Veneto in September 2005 for me to get reference of further scenes around the area and then again in November to set up the exhibition and preview weekend.

The exhibition received much acclaim from a well known art critic from the Veneto and was featured on local television.

Some friends bought me this beautiful leather bound sketchbook from their recent trip to Venice.

It contains what looks like Amalfi watercolour paper. I’m really looking forward to filling the pages with lots of watercolours painted on location.

There’s something about olive trees that makes me want to paint them. It could be their gnarled, twisted branches, the obvious association with olive oil (which I love) or perhaps it’s because our son is called Oliver!

It seems that whenever I come across olive trees, out comes my sketchbook. And so I have lots of watercolour studies and pen and ink drawings of olive trees.

I’ve even uploaded the painting process of one of my sketchbook watercolours of an olive tree on YouTube.
