Gateway Gallery The Gateway Gallery is a contemporary exhibition space in the heart of Shrewsbury, just 3 minutes walk from the train station. Enter the SALOPIAN OPEN now!

As a not-for-profit organisation, the voluntary panel offers a unique opportunity for artists to contribute to a challenging exhibition calendar that may not fit into a solely commercial gallery. Entries are welcomed from both established and new artists, artists of any media, individuals and groups in the hope that the widest possible spectrum of works can be highlighted and shared with local audiences. Positioned in the centre of Shrewsbury, the gallery is an established part of Shropshire’s art scene. As well as organising activities at Gallery3, the SADAA art panel has successfully run the Shropshire Open Competition for many years and this year’s competition promises to be bigger and better than it has ever been before. The panel also runs a number of art visits each year.

We know putting your work forward for an exhibition can feel a little daunting, especially if you’ve never done anything like it before. But that’s part of what we love about The Salopian Open.

All ages, all media and all themes are welcome. Whether you’ve been creating for decades, have recently discovered something you love doing, or have been quietly making things without ever showing anyone, we’d love you to consider entering.

You don’t need an exhibition history, an art degree or a studio full of expensive equipment. Just something you’ve created that you’d like to share.

Have a flick through, and perhaps send this to someone who needs a little encouragement to put their work out there.

Meet this year’s Salopian Open judges!

We’re really pleased to welcome Professor Andrew Brewerton, Faye Lorente Shyllon, Clae and Rob Lawton to this year’s judging panel.

Andrew and Faye return after helping judge last year’s Open, while Clae joins us for 2026, bringing another perspective to the panel.

Rob knows particularly well what it feels like to be on the other side of the process. He was the overall winner of the 2025 Salopian Open, as well as taking the Local Talent Award, and his prize exhibition Souveniers is coming to Gateway later this month.

Between them they bring a huge range of experience across art, education and creative practice, and we’re really looking forward to seeing what catches their eye this year.

We’re so pleased to have Frame it by Kaleidoscope back supporting the Salopian Open again this year 💛

They’ve very kindly donated a £200 voucher for the overall winner, plus £50 vouchers for each of our other category winners.

It’s brilliant to have a local business supporting the artists taking part, especially one that works so closely with creatives through framing, printing and artwork scanning. A big thank you to the team at Frame It for getting behind the Open again this year.

Artists, this one’s for you 🎨 The Salopian Open is back, and we’d love to see your work on our walls.

Entries are OPEN! With £20 covering up to three artworks for consideration. You don’t need to live in Shropshire, and whether this would be your first exhibition or your fiftieth, you’re welcome to enter.

The overall winner will receive their own solo exhibition at The Gateway Gallery. There are also awards for Local Talent, Rising Star and Innovation, with more prizes to be announced.

Entry fees support SADAA Arts, the charity behind the gallery, helping us keep the doors open and bring more exhibitions to Shrewsbury.

What a day! 🏃

Started with a flying visit to collect some prints from the brilliant Richard Hammerton who’ll be part of the photography exhibition I’m organising 🙌

( IT’S THIS FRIDAY 5-7pm at the Gateway Gallery )

Hot-tailed it over to the gallery to prep and paint the walls 🎨

Home to collect some posters before wandering around town to distribute.

Took some snaps of Shrewsbury Arts Trail at the Shrewsbury Museum (don’t forget to vote for your People’s Choice Award so your favourite artist has a chance to win £500).

Bumped into these two stars at Shrewsbury Market Hall 🥰💛 Love you Annalin / Mitsuro Hikime jeweller The Makery & Karen Duffy abstract expressionist artist 🙏

Btw Annalin has a great workshop ‘Learn the Art of Making Mitsuro Hikime Jewellery’ this Saturday at English Bridge Studios (only 2 spaces left, send her a DM) 💍
