Monet’s Studio in Giverny

“I want these paintings to offer hope in these troubled times. My paintings peer into private spaces where artists have used their creativity and imagination to change the way we perceive the world.” — Damian Elwes

Keith Haring’s Studio
Damian Elwes

In the early 1980s, Elwes lived in New York, where he was an early exponent of graffiti. A chance encounter with Keith Haring in a New York subway led to the start of his career as an artist. He and Haring talked graffiti and Haring encouraged Elwes to start painting. Haring insisted that Elwes make a painting before they spoke again.

Damian Elwes

Elwes has painted over 200 artist studios, including those of Monet, Cezanne, Gauguin and Frida Kahlo, visiting the spaces and buildings where each artist worked. Using photographs to piece together the stories, combined with meticulous research, he has been able to recreate each studio as authentically as possible.

Our Pop Art Exhibition at Sixteen Gallery, Cheltenham is featuring works from Damian Elwes alongside original prints from Sir Peter Blake and David Spiller.

“Such A Perfect Day”
by David Spiller

By using different painterly techniques Spiller creates rich and complex surfaces, blending bold Pop Art colours with expressionistic painting. To this he adds another layer of informal freehand texts and drawings, including characters and motifs that echo in his mind. He compares his paintings to architect-designed buildings onto whose walls people have written graffiti.

“Born to be Wild”
by David Spiller

Spiller says the popular songs he appropriates lyrics from are the soundtrack to his life. They continually run through his head, whether he wants them there or not. “Popular music of this kind now represents the continuity of Western culture – something in which most of us share and which creates a common bond.” What matters to David Spiller is the idea of continuity – ordinary life, lived as most people live it.

“Dreams can come True”
by David Spiller

Spiller’s art is filled with enthusiasm and energy. Recycling concepts from popular culture and childhood memories, his iconic images have an immediate and infectious appeal. A spirit of collaboration is central to Spiller’s work, most obviously in his use of found images from comic strips and in his appropriation of lyrics from popular songs.
