You can explore 15 different rooms - along with the courtyard and other hidden gems - each offering something different, giving a glimpse into the Castle's past and how it has changed over the centuries. Our new interactive displays give you the opportunity to touch and use some of the items we have on display. We also house some of the Staffordshire Hoard exhibition. Tamworth Castle is set in extensive grounds with many nearby facilities and next to the town centre.

🎃👻Do not miss our family friendly half term Halloween trail - The Curse Beneath the Castle
🗓️Open every day from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026

🏰Something has been disturbed beneath the Castle...🏰

During the Castle's essential repair works, builders have accidentally disturbed something that was better left alone. Since then, strange sounds and shadows have been reported throughout the Castle.

Long ago, the castle's stonemasons knew that something strange lurked beneath the Castle. To keep everyone safe, they created special Magical Mason's Marks and carved them into the stone. The marks formed a protective barrier, trapping whatever was beneath the Castle and keeping it from getting out.

But over the centuries, the marks have faded and their magical power has weakened. Now that the builders have disturbed the ancient protections, whatever was trapped beneath the Castle may be trying to escape...

Can you find the hidden Magical Mason's Marks, crack the secret code and restore their power before it's too late?👀

🧵✨ A little glimpse into our fortnightly Castle Craft Club!

We come for the crafting, but stay for the company! ❤️

There's always plenty of creativity, laughter, sharing ideas and, of course, a good old natter!

Our lovely group is currently busy making festive decorations to help bring a little Christmas magic to Tamworth Castle. 🎄✨ We can't wait to see their creations around the Castle this Christmas!

The current project to protect and restore Tamworth Castle for future generations is all about tackling the deeper structural issues which have been impacting the building in one way or another for many years.

But that also means the cracks you might have seen on the surface can now be properly repaired too.

Here Mark is carrying out a crack stitch repair at the top of the staircase.

🧱 Broken bricks at the centre of the crack have been replaced with reclaimed bricks of similar style
🧱 Every fourth mortar course has been raked out
🧱 Stainless steel helical bars are inserted into those courses to reconnect and reinforce the wall
🧱 The whole area is repointed

This is just one small aspect of a major £1.9m project to secure the legacy of Tamworth Castle and the exhibitions it is home to.

In honour of National fossil day we thought we’d share some of the oldest items in our collections - some fossils!
Here we have a few items that aren’t normally on display.

🟢 Stigmaria - a Carboniferous plant which lived approximately 360 to 299 million years ago. This specimen was found in Polesworth on an opencast coal mining site In 1955.
🟢 Lepidodendron - a large tree-like plant which thrived during the Carboniferous Period 358.9 to 298.9 million years ago.
🟢 Quaternary Bone (Fossilised) A Quaternary bone refers to animal or human skeletal remains deposited during the Quaternary Period. This period spans from about 2.58 million years ago to the present day encompassing the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs). Because these bones are relatively young in geological terms, they are often preserved as subfossils rather than fully turned to stone.

On this day in 1066, at the Battle of Hastings, King Harold II's life and reign of England ended and William the Duke of Normandy claimed victory.

This Norman conquest proceeded to transform England's culture, language and architecture, leaving some magnificent legacies such as our stone castle which still stands today.

William and his followers built many castle and fortifications across the country to control the locals. Our outer shell keep and tower were built around 1070. A rare intact example of Norman architecture that is still proudly standing almost 1,000 years later.

The mystery of the hidden arrow marks...

During our current restoration works, behind a section of Oak Room panelling, the team found a marking showing three arrows within a shield shape. Was it a craftsman’s mark? An assembly mark? A heraldic symbol?

Well we don’t know for sure yet but a couple of people have messaged us who think it may represent the Hales family coat of arms.

However there does not appear to be any connection between the Hales and Tamworth. Very little information exists regarding the origin of the panelling in the Oak Room which may have come from another Townshend residence, or purchased from another property and installed in the Castle. It still does not explain why the three arrows were so crudely made on the back of the wood dentil. The mystery remains! What do you think?
