🌈Hundreds of children from across Tamworth are getting ready to take to the stage in the Castle Grounds as part of our fantastic Kaleidoscope of Dreams festival.

🎭Teachers and pupils from 15 schools have been working together to put on an amazing show for the people of Tamworth with performances of song and dance in a huge celebration of everything that makes this town so great.

The event takes place in Tamworth Castle Grounds between 11am and 5pm on Saturday, July 4, and includes a packed programme on the main stage.

Towards the end of the day, all the children will come together to sing four special songs – three well-known hits and one original number inspired by this year’s festival theme of ‘better together’. 🌈

So bring your family, your friends and your picnics, and let’s show the kids our support with a big crowd to perform to! 🍲

Tamworth Castle welcomed more family connections to the collections on Saturday 13 June.

Pictured next to the painting of 'Champion' are Andrew Sheldon, on the left, and his brother Robert Woosnam-Savage, great-great-grandsons of the artist Richard Whitford, who painted the portrait of Champion the locally bred 'square' bull.

There will be chance to view Champion's portrait when it is on display again this July in the Pop-up Art Gallery in Ankerside Shopping Centre. 20-26 July.

Andrew and Robert were delighted to also visit Tamworth Castle after seeing the picture at the museum store.

🏰 Major conservation project underway at Tamworth Castle – but we’re still open to visitors!

Tamworth Borough Council is proud to announce the start of the biggest modern conservation programme in the history of Tamworth Castle, supported by a £1.9m investment to protect this iconic 1,000-year-old landmark for generations to come.

🔧What’s happening?

Specialist contractors have now begun work on a complex restoration project, which includes:

➡️Repairing and replacing historic drainage systems beneath the castle and motte
➡️Stabilising areas affected by structural movement
➡️Repairing deteriorating masonry
➡️Carrying out significant roof repairs to the south wing

A key focus is the ageing drainage system beneath the castle, where broken pipes and historic damage have contributed to waterlogging and building movement.

💷 Investment in our heritage
The project is funded by:
£1,716,238 from the Arts Council England Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND)
£190,695 from Tamworth Borough Council

The restoration will be carried out in carefully planned phases, meaning the castle will remain open throughout the programme. Some areas, including the Townshend Room and a connecting corridor, will be temporarily closed during early works, but most of the site will remain accessible.

Visitors may also have the opportunity to see conservation work in action as the project progresses.

🧱 Archaeology & care
Every stage of the work is being carefully monitored by archaeologists and overseen in line with guidance from Historic England, ensuring the castle’s rich history is fully protected and recorded as works continue.

🏗️ What to expect on site
Scaffolding will soon be visible on the motte and upper walkways
Some paths around the castle will be temporarily closed
The programme is expected to last around 18 months

This work will not only protect the fabric of the building, but also improve conditions for the castle’s priceless collections, including items linked to the Staffordshire Hoard.

As custodians of this extraordinary heritage site, we are committed to ensuring Tamworth Castle continues to stand at the heart of our town for the next 1,000 years.

🎨 Need to inject some colour in your life? 🎨

The upcoming Kaleidoscope of Dreams festival on July 4 will again kick off in style with an explosion of colour and energy in a FREE Rainbow Fun Run. 🌈🌈 🏃‍♀️ 🏃🏾‍♂️

Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Castle Grounds, we’re inviting children and adults to get colourful with us, ready for the rest of the day’s celebrations.

So here’s everything you need to know about our Rainbow Fun Run:

📍Location: Tamworth Castle Grounds main arena (the big field)
📍Meeting point: Outside Tamworth Activity Centre (opposite the tennis courts)
⌚Time: 10.45am for an 11am start
🏃‍♀️Distance: Three laps of the big field
🌈 What to expect? Colourful powder is thrown into the air (and onto the runners) at various points throughout the course.
🧒Age: 3+
🧑‍🧒Entry: Places must be booked in advance. Tickets are per child and include one responsible adult to run alongside.

Contractors have been on site this week marking the start of a massive £1.9m restoration project to secure the future of our beloved castle.

Any project on a building of this significance has to be carried out under the watchful eye of an archaeologist to make sure it’s done with the utmost care and attention.

Phase 1 of the work involves digging under the castle and into the motte to repair the drainage system, which has broken due to age and damage from tree roots.

This has led to some areas becoming waterlogged and others drying out, causing subsidence and movement in the building.

Before the new system can be laid, we had to be sure there was nothing historically significant under the ground that might impact the intended route of the drainage.

So we had archaeologist Will Mitchell at the ready, trowel in hand, excited at what ancient treasures might be discovered.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for the project!), the most interesting find on this occasion was a chicken leg, so work can now continue.

🏰 Today is Aethelflaed day as 1,108 years ago Aethelflaed died in Tamworth. Tonight, Tamworth Castle will be lit up blue and yellow to commemorate the Lady of The Mercians and we’re currently flying the Mercian flag.

ℹ️ Aethelflaed was the daughter of King Alfred the Great. She achieved many things during her life, including becoming the sole ruler of the kingdom of Mercia. You can read more about her on our website.

At the height of her success, tragedy struck and Aethelflaed suddenly fell ill. She died in Tamworth on 12 June 918, probably aged around 48. Her body was then prepared and carried to St Oswald's Priory, in Gloucester, where her husband was already buried and which they founded.

🌸 Meet the artists behind our Flower Castle project! 🌸

We're delighted to be working with Debbie Murphy of and Sarah Baxter of , whose creativity and expertise are helping to bring this wonderful community installation to life.

Pictured here with our fantastic Castle Craft group, they have been working with community groups across Tamworth to create beautiful handmade flowers for the Flower Castle. With over 1,000 flowers now made, the installation is really starting to come together, and it's amazing to see everyone's contributions blooming into something special.

📅 Save the date – Saturday 25 July and join us in the Castle Grounds to see the Flower Castle adorning the castle walls, alongside a day of music, activities and family fun. We can't wait to share it with you! 🌸💐

We’re getting ready for the biggest conservation project in the modern history of Tamworth Castle.

This will tackle many of the deeper underlying issues which keep coming to the surface and will help us secure the legacy of this important historical monument.

The scope of work includes:
✔️Repairing historic drainage systems
✔️Stabilising areas of structural movement
✔️Addressing eroded masonry
✔️Significant roof repairs
✔️Protecting important museum collections

This will be delivered in carefully planned phases, ensuring the castle remains largely open to visitors throughout the project.

Where possible, the programme will also provide opportunities for the public to observe conservation work in progress.
