Non-profit Arts project and gallery space supporting the local community and promoting the arts in Wealden

Victoria Pavilion Arts is a project delivered by Sussex Support Service in Uckfield. We passionately believe that art has the ability to make people feel good, build confidence and connect with others. We develop participatory arts activities and experiences with people who are often excluded and, through our gallery and workshop spaces promote and provide opportunities for local artists, creative practitioners and emerging talent.

It's about so much more than art and cake!

It's a place to slow down, enjoy a little creativity, meet local artists, catch up with friends and make new connections.

It's handmade cake and good coffee, discovering wonderful local artwork, finding out what's happening in our creative community — and knowing you're always welcome, whether you stay for ten minutes or the whole afternoon. ❤️

Come on your own, bring a friend, or bring the dog! 🐾

🌳 NEW GUEST ARTIST: DARREN SLATER

More trees! 🌳 It seems our Pavilion walls have developed a bit of a woodland theme this month — and we’re loving it!

We’re delighted to welcome Darren Slater as one of our October Guest Artists.

Inspired by the woodlands and countryside of East Sussex, Darren’s work explores the beauty, atmosphere and quiet mystery of the natural world.

Using layered acrylic techniques and fine detail, he creates immersive landscapes that capture the changing light, depth and character of the places that inspire him.

There’s something wonderfully calming about Darren’s woodland scenes — they invite you to pause, reflect and step into the landscape, even if just for a moment.

🌿 Come and immerse yourself in Darren’s work at this Saturday’s Art Café.

🌳 NEW GUEST ARTIST: JOANNA FARROW

Another new artist has arrived on our walls this month — and we’re delighted to welcome the fabulous Joanna Farrow!
Joanna is also joining us as the facilitator for our new Slow Learning course, The Art of Trees, which starts this week. So it feels particularly fitting that her beautiful artworks are filling the Pavilion with trees!

🌳 And we have a little VPA exclusive…
We’re very excited to be showing one particularly wonderful piece by Joanna that has never been exhibited before — you can literally see it here first! 👀🎨

Trees are definitely a bit of a theme at the Pavilion this month, and Joanna’s work beautifully complements the other artwork currently on our walls.

Her works celebrate the beauty of Ashdown Forest, local farmland and ancient woodland. A deep love of trees and the changing seasons runs through her work, from the soft, hazy atmosphere of winter to the rich colours and energy of spring and autumn.

Whether sketching on location or simply walking and observing, Joanna is fascinated by the character of trees, shifting mists, changing light and the quiet wonders of the forest floor.

So, if you’re visiting the Pavilion this month, or joining us at the Art Cafe this weekend, do take a little time to explore Joanna’s work — and see if you can spot that never-before-exhibited VPA exclusive! 🌳✨

🧵 NEW ARTWORK ON THE WALLS!
Today is changeover day for our Guest Artists, which means that next time you visit the Pavilion there’ll be some new artwork to discover — and some old favourites, perhaps in a different spot just to keep you on your toes! 😉
One of our new guest artists is Isobel Moore, a mixed-media textile artist based here in Uckfield.
Isobel’s vibrant work brings together reclaimed fabrics, recycled sari silks, papers, soft cottons and handmade felt, using layering, appliqué and machine embroidery to create colourful and tactile pieces.
Her work is finished with beautiful hand-stitched details and sometimes a scattering of beads and buttons, adding another layer of texture and interest.

What a lovely Arts for Wellbeing session we had on Friday with textile artist 🧵🌿

Marilyn introduced our participants to the beautiful world of vintage embroidery, exploring simple stitches, fabrics, lace and treasured scraps to create something completely their own.

There was lots of quiet concentration, creativity and conversation as everyone experimented with different ways of stitching and embellishing. And the verdict was very clear… everyone loved it and wanted to do more!

We think that’s a pretty good sign of a successful Arts for Wellbeing session. 💛

Thank you to Marilyn for sharing her knowledge and inspiring us to slow down, stitch, experiment and enjoy the simple pleasure of making.

🍂 SLOW LEARNING — DRAWING TREES with Joanna Farrow

Love trees? This one’s for you! 🌳

Our October Slow Learning course is all about drawing trees — exploring how to capture their form, characteristics and individuality.

Join landscape artist Joanna Farrow for four relaxed sessions where you’ll experiment with different drawing materials and surfaces, developing your own ways of seeing and capturing the character of trees.

✏️ Week 1 — Charcoal
Explore different types and sizes of charcoal, along with rubbers, sponges and other dry materials to create a variety of marks and capture form.

💧 Week 2 — Adding water
Introduce water, watercolour pens and acrylic pens and discover how wet materials can transform your drawings.

📜 Week 3 — Exploring paper
Experiment with cartridge paper, newspaper, coloured paper and gessoed paper, discovering how different surfaces can add variety, texture and interest.

🖼️ Week 4 — Developing your work
Continue working with your favourite materials and explore different ways to finish and frame your drawings.

Our Slow Learning Sessions prioritise time, reflection and shared experience — creating a supportive environment where you can develop skills, experiment without pressure, connect with others and enjoy the process of creative practice.

Led by professional artists, our small-group sessions take place in our warm and welcoming centre.

🔴 ‘Ships in the Night’ — just one of SIX paintings with a new owner!

Well, I do love a red dot! ❤️ And this week I got to apply three of them to paintings by our guest artist Martin Rolt.
Martin’s beautiful, richly textured paintings have proved incredibly popular with visitors to the Pavilion, with six paintings now heading off to new homes. 🎨🏡

We love championing local artists by showcasing — and hopefully selling — their work. And the best bit? 20% of every sale goes towards our Arts for Wellbeing projects, helping us continue to provide creative opportunities which support good mental health in our local community.

Martin’s work, along with our other guest artists Philip Edwards and Clare Filskow, continues to adorn our walls, including a new addition from Phil.
So if you’re popping into the centre this week — or perhaps coming along to the Repair Café Uckfield this weekend — take a moment to have a look at the artwork on our walls.

You never know… you might find your own red dot waiting to happen! 🔴😊

Our next Saturday Creative Workshop is coming up soon….

Paint Fabulous Flowers with Laura Darling

Immerse yourself in the colour, scent and tactility of flowers during this full-day painting workshop with artist Laura Darling. Exploring colour, composition, form and expression, the day is designed to help you loosen up and capture the character of flowers without becoming too caught up in detail. You might create several studies to develop later, or a finished painting to take home.
Suitable for beginners and those with more experience, the workshop takes place in our bright, welcoming and fully accessible centre, with refreshments and a delicious light lunch included.
