On Thursday 4th June 2026, Workington Heritage Group welcomed six representatives of Cumberland & Westmorland Freemasons to the Helena Thompson Museum, who kindly donated £6,400 from their charity so the Museum can purchase and site a children's sensory hut, in what is know as the secret garden. The hut will provide sensory experiences that help children with sensory processing differences, autism spectrum conditions, learning disabilities or additional needs and those who benefit from a calm, engaging or exploratory environment to explore, regulate and engage with their environment through visual stimulation, tactile experiences, auditory elements, movement activities and calming features and also playing together with natural materials to touch and smell, interactive displays, sound-making features and discovery through multiple senses. Keith Beaumont, chairman of the Trustees of the Cumberland & Westmorland Freemasons charity said "Cumbria Freemasons are absolutely delighted to be able to assist with the addition of a children's sensory hut in what can only be described as a lovely peaceful garden setting and we take this opportunity to thank the leadership team and volunteers at the Helena Thompson Museum for all the very fine work they do in what is clearly a most important local Museum and community venue for Workington and West Cumbria in respect of history, industry, culture and social life"
