From Our Collections: Sampler bag, 1899

This bag began its life as a sampler crafted by Cassie Brook in 1899, when she was around 11 years old and living in East Sussex. The sampler was later repurposed with the attachment of a handle between the 1920s and 1940s, turning it into a knitting bag to make it useful. It is an example of a single piece with multiple personal histories.

From Our Collections: Open Robe & Petticoat, c. 1770 (fabric c. 1730)

This magnificent dress is made from rust-coloured corded silk, woven with a pattern of trees and trailing flowers. It appears to have been refashioned in the 1770s from earlier fabric, which was very common as the silk to make a dress like this was so valuable.

According to our records it was worn by a Ms Blaker, of Bolney, a village some 11 miles north of Brighton. The dress came into our collection in 1976 and was transferred from Anne of Cleves House in Lewes.

Before & After - Archaeology gallery

A peak into our new look Archaeology gallery! The beautiful parquet floor has been revealed, (once covered by very '1980s' style brown carpet tiles) the cases have been painted a deep green which really shows off our beautiful artefacts, and a new lighting system has further transformed both the objects and the cases.
Similarly, our costume and social history displays are looking fantastic with the above changes, plus the opening of the north wing of windows, letting in natural light into a space that was once very dark indeed.

Another Sussex exhibition is now on at the Museum.

Learning disabled, autistic and neurodivergent artists from the Figment Arts Studio have been working along the south coast to explore the rich and varied folklore of the area.

The exhibition features original works by the studio group members and large-scale collaborative paintings that represent the combined brushstrokes of over 600 people who took part in our workshops.
