Reportedly the observers at 20 Group also enjoyed a drink, and created a shortcut to the nearest pub (The Carlton Tavern), through a hedge so they could get there quickly after training exercises! If you are in the pub this afternoon, why not raise a glass to the observers. 🍻

What would happen if there was a fire at York Cold War Bunker? 🔥

We have a really interesting fire safety mechanism in our generator room. This is the room in which fires would be most likely to start, due to the large amount of fuel. Above the generator, we have a thin metal wire: if a fire starts, that will snap, bringing the door to the room slamming shut, and stopping oxygen from getting in.

Simultaneously, weights will fall on the cans of CO2 we have upstairs, flooding the room with carbon dioxide, and hopefully killing the fire!

Ring, ring! York Cold War Bunker here, with some cold war telephone facts:

☎️ The famous "red telephone" linking the USA and the USSR is a myth! The hotline between the USSR and USA was never a telephone.
☎️ Until 1981, the UK's post office and British Telecom (BT) were linked!
☎️ There was a telephone exchange under Chancery Lane tube station!
☎️ Usually after BBC productions aired, the writer would be showered with phone calls. However, after 1984's 'Threads', writer Mick Jackson received no calls- everyone was too horrified by what they'd seen.

Ever wondered how to clean old paper? 🤔

At the bunker, we grate rubber, and then gently rub the gratings onto the paper, which picks up dirt! It's a long, slow process, but stops the documents from getting damaged.
