It was a Member-Led workshop for this month’s Professional Development session, with Sample-Studios member Elize de B**r stepping in to share her expertise in Frame Making! This was much-requested topic following Elize’s Solo Exhibition (featuring her own magnificently made frames) ‘Biscuit Tin Nostalgia’ in Sample-Studios Gallery: The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion earlier this year.

This hands-on workshop included learning about frame construction, glass installation and creating a float mount for paper-based artwork.

We love to include Member-Led workshops like this as part of our ongoing Professional Development programme as it reinforces the value of the peer network our members can access as part of our community of over 200 artists! Member Monday - Áine Ryan

Based in West Waterford, Áine’s work explores feminine identity within rural, patriarchal contexts, grounded in personal experience. Working across object-making and site-specific land interventions, she creates sculptural works using cast glass, textiles, found objects, and materials sourced from the rural environment.

Áine’s solo exhibition ‘All she could do was moo’ opens this Thursday 22 October at Waterford Gallery of Art at 6.30pm. The exhibition examines the parallels between the treatment of women and farm animals in rural Ireland through glass cast sculpture, found objects, film, installation and audio. 'All she could do was moo' continues until 30 January 2027.

Áine is a graduate of MTU Crawford College of Art and Design, has won multiple awards and residencies, exhibited extensively in both Ireland and internationally. Earlier this year Áine was awarded a ‘Sample 15’ Artist Bursaries which she used to undertake a residency in Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre.

We were delighted to welcome curators Helen Carey and Matt Packer to Sample-Studios this week as part of our ongoing Curator Visits series! 14 of our members met with Helen and Matt in October.

Helen is Director of the National Sculpture Factory in Cork. She has extensive experience leading major arts organisations, including Fire Station Artists’ Studios (Dublin), Centre Culturel Irlandais (Paris), Galway Arts Centre.

Matt is the Director / CEO of EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art. His previous roles include Director, CCA Centre For Contemporary Art Derry-Londonderry (2014 – 2017) and Curator of Exhibitions & Projects, Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork (2008 – 2013).

Sarah Long's residency in TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space continues!

During Sarah’s time in the space, she has developed a new performance which she debuted last month. The performance featured voice, sound, actions and gestures as Sarah moved through the space.

Sarah performs through her autofictional character Mary. Mary’s dreams offer a critique of inherited language and storytelling systems, while highlighting themes that reverberate throughout Irish culture such as colonialism, mythology and the land.

We’re excited to see where Sarah takes this work next.

🎬 Announcing Parallax Emerging Film Artist Award Exhibition 2026 🎥

The Parallax Emerging Film Artist Award is a partnership between Sample-Studios and Cork International Film Festival, formed in 2023, to recognise outstanding emerging talent in artist film nationally. Parallax seeks out and supports promising graduate film artists from tertiary fine art colleges throughout Ireland, offering their work a meaningful, quality platform as part of Ireland’s largest film festival, in partnership with Ireland’s largest artist studios. In 2026, we have expanded the Parallax Award to allow it to positively impact more promising graduate film artists through a jury-selected exhibition in The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion of 4 shortlisted graduates from around Ireland, as part of the 71st CIFF.

This year's exhibiting artists and Parallax Award shortlist are:

1. Harrison Connally, MTU Crawford College of Art & Design
2. Autumn MacNamara, Limerick School of Art and Design
3. Andy Chirali, National College of Art & Design
4. Nikol Ochichenko, Institute of Art, Design & Technology

The winner of the Parallax Award will be selected from the shortlisted exhibitors and announced during the CIFF Festival programme. They will receive a €3000 bursary, 12-month honorary membership of Sample-Studios and accreditation at the 72nd CIFF.

The Parallax Award partnership creates a distinct space to champion emerging film artists to bolster their practices at the early stages of development, with a high quality platform.

BASIC INCOME FOR THE ARTS: MAJOR UPDATE
The Government has secured €34.4 million in Budget 2027 to fully fund the new Basic Income for the Arts scheme.

Here’s what you need to know:
–2,000 professional artists will receive €325 per week for three years.
–Up to 750 successful applicants will be notified from Thursday, 15 October.
–All applicants will receive a status update this week.
–Just over 10,000 applications were received.
–Payments will be made monthly at €1,413.21.
–Payments beginning in 2026 will be backdated to September; those beginning in 2027 will be paid from or backdated to January.

This marks a significant milestone for artists in Ireland, establishing a long-term scheme built on the evidence and success of the Basic Income for the Arts Pilot.

Congratulations to Patrick O'Donovan and his department on their work towards this, and in particular former minister Catherine Martin for starting the scheme.

Member Monday

Billie Adele O'Regan is a visual artist whose practice explores the wildness and contradictions of identity and embodiment through large-scale figurative paintings and sculptural installations. Her work draws on grotesque theory, the monstrous feminine, and the alchemy of paint as a collaborator, creating hybrid bodies that challenge traditional beauty standards.

Billie graduated with First Class Honours from MTU Crawford College of Art and Design in 2025. Her work was included in the RHA 195th Annual Exhibition and she was the recipient of Backwater Ciarán Langford Memorial Award, the Sample Network Award and the Swerve Magazine Residency Prize.

Billie is Artist-In-Residence at SWERVE for October 2026. SWERE invites artists and writers to their HQ in West Cork throughout the year for short residencies. Residents are invited from Ireland and internationally. The residencies are free and by invitation only.

SWERVE is an independent literary and visual arts journal, project space, and residency program based in Skibbereen.

It was a rich afternoon of discussion at Sample-Studios Gallery: The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion today as we launched ‘Róisín’ by Elinor O'Donovan, curated by as part of the Sample-Studios Spike Island Residency. Thanks to Historian Dr Tom Spalding for speaking with Elinor about her work and the fascinating history which underpins it. Thanks, too, to our partners Spike Island and Sirius Arts Centre for working on this valuable residency programme with us, which has now supported 10 visual artists. Finally, thanks to our neighbours Cork Public Museum for hosting our event!

Opening TOMORROW!

All are warmly invited to the Opening Reception of 'Róisín', a new solo exhibition by Elinor O'Donovan and curated by Miguel Amado, tomorrow Saturday 10 October from 2-4:30pm. The event commences in , Fitzgerald’s Park, where O’Donovan is in conversation with Dr Tom Spalding, an historian and Assistant Lecturer in Visual Culture at , before continuing with a reception in The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion until 4:30pm.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Sample-Studios, and , with support from the and . The exhibition continues from 10 October - 7 November.
