What would Cork City look like if children were in charge?

From 5-28 June, discover 'PlaySpaces' by Cork artist Chris Finnegan, a joyful exhibition in Sample-Studios Gallery: The Lord Mayor's Pavilion developed in collaboration with Cork Midsummer Festival. This exhibition forms part of a city-wide play trail designed by children, for children.

'PlaySpaces' invites families to explore cosy dens, secret hideaways, playful installations and imaginative spaces created in collaboration with children from Múin Afterschool, St. Vincent’s Primary School, and The Crann Centre. In The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion, discover a unique Play Space accompanied by the models, drawings, and photographs designed in collaboration with children as the ambitious project unfolded.

Don't miss the Opening Reception on Friday 19 June, 3-5pm, featuring a special kids disco hosted by Stevie G - all are welcome!

Come and see The Lord Mayor's Pavilion transformed into a space where children are not just visitors, but creators!

Reflecting on another outstanding year for inclusive creative education in Cork City through Sample-Studios Cork Creative Careers Programme. Thanks you to all the schools and groups who took part and made this year such a success. Thanks to our incredible, hard-working tutors Kate McElroy, Aoife Claffey, Olivia Golden, Stevie G, Elize de Beer, Etaoin Melville, Fiona Boniwell, Ava Hayes, and Sarah Buckley who deliver outstanding and inspiring workshops. A very special thanks to our supporters for making this important work possible. We’re very proud of the results of this programme and it couldn’t happen with their support – thanks to The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, The Late Late Show RTÉ Toy Show Appeal, The Ireland Funds, and RDJ LLP.

We've been having ball partnering with MTU Arts Office to offer our Creative Breaks programme to their staff!

Creative Breaks offers employees an opportunity to take a creative break in a series of artistic activities facilitated by a professional artist and Sample-Studios member during their work day. The activities are designed to encourage team building within a fun group environment but also encourage individual creativity and a sense of wellbeing. We're looking forward to more!

Summer's off to a fine start at Sample-Studios! The great weather coincided with our first members outing of the sunny season, which took us to visit Mick Wilkins of Kilnagleary Studios in Carrigaline. It was a fascinating morning learning about lost wax casting, wood carving, clay firing, and much more. Mick is prolific in the public art realm and our members got lots useful insights into working at large scale and accessing public art opportunities.

The weekend is fast approaching so step into 'House of Memory / بيت الذاكرة', a solo exhibition by Irish-Iraqi artist Basil Al-Rawi at Sample-Studios Gallery, The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion in Fitzgerald's Park.

Emerging from the Iraq Photo Archive, the exhibition brings together photography, film, and immersive virtual reality to explore how memories are carried through images, voice, and lived experience. Visitors can enter reconstructed photographic moments through VR, encounter moving personal testimonies, and experience poetic reflections on identity, language, and belonging.

Part of the 3rd Symposium on Digital Art in Ireland, this exhibition offers a powerful and deeply human exploration of memory, archive, and connection.

Open Tues–Sat, 11am–5pm.

There's a special event for little ones and their families coming up in TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space at Triskel Arts Centre ✨

Artist in Residence Chris Finnegan invites early years children and their grown-ups to explore Play This Way — an interactive sculptural playscape designed for building, hiding, imagining and creating together. Developed during Chris’ residency in TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space, this work-in-progress installation is inspired by child-led learning and loose parts play theory.

This special preview offers little ones the chance to test and shape the environment before it officially opens to the public in June. Sessions are facilitated by Chris alongside a qualified Montessori director, with parents and guardians encouraged to stay and play throughout.

Chris will document how the space is used, but no photographs of children will be taken.

We were delighted for our new Cork College of FET Douglas Street Campus residents to get together this afternoon to tour the spaces and facilities they will avail of for 10 weeks this summer. 2026 is a particularly exciting year for this residency as our kind partners have increased the number of our members they will host from 2 to 6, expanding the impact of this wonderful residency to support more local artists. We will be putting out more updates over the summer as our residents get settled in and as their work develops so watch this space! For now, big thanks to our partners Cork College of FET for facilitating this residency and congratulations to Struàn Bell, Kim-Ling Morris, Anna Moloney, Andrea Newman, Maureen Clark, and Seán Cahill on being selected to undertake this residency!

Our team and Board came together today to celebrate 15 years of Sample-Studios.
15 years since our beginnings as an artist-led artist studios in the former Tax Office in Cork City Centre to now Ireland's largest artist studios.

15 years of Sample-Studios means 15 years of service by Kim-Ling Morris - a founder, artist and Financial Manager - who kept the ship afloat through choppy waters and to a safe harbour. Today, we celebrate her dedication to Sample-Studios and to Cork's thriving arts community.

This evening, Sample-Studios members will come together online for a special Themed Members Meeting focused on the Sample-Studios 'Sample 15' Artist Bursary Programme. We’re looking forward to hearing from bursary recipients Áine Ryan, Ashleigh Ellis, Emma O’Hara, Billy Lingwood, Eoghan O’Kelly, Artem Trofimenko, Kim Crowley, and Aisling Roche about the projects, opportunities, and developments they’ve undertaken with the support of the bursary and the impact it has had on their practices so far this year.

These peer-led gatherings are a valuable part of the Sample-Studios community, creating space for artists to share experiences, exchange knowledge, and support one another’s creative growth.

The Sample-Studios 'Sample 15' Artist Bursary Programme celebrates 15 years of Sample-Studios by supporting members to access mentorships, residencies, equipment, and other opportunities that help deepen and expand artistic practice.
