Framer Framed is a platform for contemporary art, visual culture and critical theory & practice. Each year the organisation puts on a variety of exhibitions in collaboration with international curators and artists, emerging as much as established, on topics such as identity politics, notions of 'the other' and historiographical propositions. Alongside exhibitions, an extensive public program is organised in order to shed different lights on the topics concerned. With this common space for dialogue, Framer Framed aims to show a plurality of voices in a globalised society.

Framer Framed started as a travelling initiative, to discuss the politics of representation and curatorial practices in the 21st century in the context of the Netherlands. We organised over 70 public events throughout the country and beyond, for and by people concerned with the museum sector. Together with visitors, source communities, museum professionals, artist, academics and other stakeholders we publicly staged critical exhibition readings; monitoring museum policy. Initial aim was to develop a contemporary, post-colonial, art historical discourse. Since opening the Framer Framed exhibition space in 2014, the focus has been on organising exhibitions and programs in our own space, implementing the knowledge acquired in our 'nomadic' years.

Symposium: Shapeshifters
As part of the exhibition 'Shapeshifters: On Wounds, Wonders and Transformation', Framer Framed is hosting a symposium on 17 October 2025. The day-long programme brings together participating artists, alongside researchers, museum directors, and cultural workers, to reflect on themes raised by the exhibition. Discussions will address the ethical and cultural implications of collections built through colonial looting and exploitation, and how these legacies continue to shape histories of dispossession and cultural erasure today.

The eighth issue of ๐ธ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘ก ๐ฝ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘™ questions the ways in which hegemonic culture and discourse tends to prioritise the ideal of openness, access, transparency and visibility. MAISON the FAUX's ๐‘‡๐ป๐ธ ๐‘‡๐ด๐ผ๐ฟ is currently open as a space for q***r and trans communities to connect, create and share. On 14 August, We Are Q***r (***rgym) invites you to a ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ inspired by the mermaidโ€™s transformation, followed by a ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง on reclaiming sport as a trans and/or q***r athlete.

The workout, given by kickboxing teacher Pennie Key and WERQ coach Maes, is designed to make you feel the power of your legs, awakening strength that was already there. Through grounding squats, forward lunges, rising calf raises and glute bridges, you move through exercises that mirror the mermaidโ€™s journey from tail to legs ยญโ€“ not as a loss, but as an expansion.

In the following talk, you're invited into a collective exploration of transformation through sport, diving into questions such as: what changes when sport is no longer a site of exclusion, but a space of inner strength, community and transformation?

๐‘‡๐ป๐ธ ๐‘‡๐ด๐ผ๐ฟ is a performance installation that draws on Hans Christian Andersenโ€™s ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ฟ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ก๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘€๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘‘ to explore themes of transformation, and the sacrifices that are made in pursuit of oneโ€™s true identity. It seeks to reframe the mermaid as a symbol of q***r identity and personal transformation, responding to a political landscape in which people are still being asked to justify their identities, conform to imposed norms, or risk erasure. The installation is on show until 17 Aug.

On 10 Aug, writer and performer Lova Yu () invites participants to rethink the dominant narrative of ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ฟ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ก๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘€๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘‘ and similar fairy tales during the workshop ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘‚๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘‰๐‘œ๐‘–๐‘๐‘’ ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐น๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘‡๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘’. Instead of identifying with the heroine, traditionally positioned as the object of desire, this event explores what it means to inhabit the marginal voices: Ursula, the sisters of the mermaid, the prince, the sand on the beach or the seafoam.

๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘‚๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘‰๐‘œ๐‘–๐‘๐‘’ ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐น๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘‡๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘’ stems from a desire to challenge the roles that have been idealised and to give space to the parts that have been silenced. Participants are invited to bring a version of a fairy tale they grew up with. Through collective reading and retelling, the stories are re-examined from a different point of view, questioning how they can be re-narrated when certain identities are seen as wrong, excessive or marginal.

Participants are encouraged to respond in whatever format feels most comfortable, whether through writing, speaking, drawing or another form. No prior writing experience is needed!

Through collective archiving and moments of dialogue, this session supports participants in transforming memories and ephemeral life experiences into meaningful zine entries.

The collective culture of a community is built from individual personal experiences: everyday objects, meaningful places, memories of people and personal narratives. However, q***r lives are often overlooked or misrepresented in institutional archives. This workshop emphasises the importance of self-preservation of q***r histories, not to conform to normative systems, but to cultivate shared knowledge and foster connections within the q***r community.

Participants can bring artifacts and memories that are important to them and are welcome to register with or without an idea of where to start.

On 14 Aug, We Are Q***r (WERQ) invites you to a ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ in solidarity with the mermaidโ€™s transformation, followed by a ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง on reclaiming sport as a trans and/or q***r athlete. WERQ (***rgym) is Amsterdamโ€™s first q***r gym, especially for people who identify as LGBTQIA+, where binary preconceptions are kept outside and no outfit is too outrageous.

Reconnecting with sport as a q***r and/or trans person often requires going against everything the world has told you. It involves unlearning and reclaiming not only space, but your body itself. Like the Little Mermaid, who gave up her voice and tail to walk among humans, transforming into your truest self can be painful ยญโ€“ and often demands deep sacrifice.

This workout, given by kickboxing teacher and martial arts practitioner Pennie Key and WERQ coach Maes, is designed to make you feel the power of your legs, awakening strength that was already there. Through grounding squats, forward lunges, rising calf raises, wall sits and glute bridges, you move through exercises that mirror the mermaidโ€™s journey from tail to legs ยญโ€“ not as a loss, but as an expansion.

In the following community talk, organisers Maes and Run Lead Emmie invite the audience into a collective exploration of transformation through sport. Together, they dive into questions such as: what changes when sport is no longer a site of exclusion, but a space of inner strength, community and transformation?

Laurence Scherz explores absurdism and humour within (social) transition: who are we once our gender has been stripped? Poet Tate Maas performs a new piece inspired by ๐‘‡๐ป๐ธ ๐‘‡๐ด๐ผ๐ฟ. Finally, Luka Prelas, winner of the Best Feminist Performance at the 2023 Q***r and Feminist Poetry Awards, recalls a long, yet poignantly funny journey of medical transition.

MAISON the FAUX presents ๐‘‡๐ป๐ธ ๐‘‡๐ด๐ผ๐ฟ, a performance installation that explores themes of transformation and the sacrifices that are made in pursuit of oneโ€™s true identity. It's developed in close collaboration with artists Diamanda Dramm, Dae Uk Kim, Anto Lรณpez Espinosa, Oriana Ikomo, Bien De Moor and Luthfi Darwis.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersenโ€™s ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ฟ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ก๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘€๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘‘, the work explores questions like: Who are we really? What distinguishes the real from the artificial? Are we ever truly ourselves, or are we constantly in flux, hiding behind masks and conventions?
