Happening this weekend: “A Medium Speaks to You”, a performative listening session and reading by Eliana Otta.

In A Medium Speaks to You, Eliana Otta blends participatory listening with performative readings. The evening begins with a poem and moves through songs, questions, textual references, and collectively performed actions. Conceived as a farewell ritual for many kinds of loss — personal and collective — the work creates a space where the boundaries between “me” and “you” begin to soften, and the experience becomes something shared.

The artist also invites those who wish to take part: writing something brief, speaking a few phrases aloud, drawing something simple, or even dancing if it feels right in the moment.

📍Sunday 22 March 16-18h
📍Tickets €10/€7 (student)

Come and see Eliana Otta’s film installation Asking Trees, Birds and Ghosts about Future Images and Sounds during the final weeks of the Sonic Acts Biennial.

The work centres on Indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon, whose leaders and land defenders are continuously murdered as a consequence of resource extraction. Through 360-degree video, sound, animation and poetics, the work moves beyond documentation into an expanded narrative.

By asking trees, birds and ghosts, Otta connects human loss with the simultaneous destruction of ecosystems and lifeworlds. In this way, she reflects on how mourning does not exist as a purely individual experience, but is part of a shared world that disappears and transforms.

While the film takes us through the Peruvian rainforest, we are immersed in questions of life and mourning. Ultimately, the film asks us how we can generate sounds and images of a future world that allows for more life.

🌜On Sunday March 22, 16.00h ROZENSTRAAT welcomes the artist with the live performance and interactive listening session “A Medium Speaks to You”.

Currently on view at ROZENSTRAAT – a rose is a rose is a rose: Whispers by Kivu Ruhorahoza and Christian Nyempeta.

In Whispers, Ruhorahoza and Nyempeta wander through the streets of Dakar, the birthplace of the Senegalese poet Birago Diop. Throughout the film they recite his poem “Breaths”, reflecting on the visible and invisible relationships between the living and the dead.

“Listen more often to things rather than beings […] It is our forefathers breathing. Who are not gone, not beneath the ground. Not dead.”

Through observation and speculation, the film reflects on the traces people leave behind and on the possibility that nothing truly disappears. The camera lingers on everyday rhythms: passing strangers, wandering stray dogs, trees moving in the wind and the murmur of the sea. Echoing Diop, the film shows how ancestors continue to live on through the choreography of everyday life.

Want to learn more about the exhibition? Join us tomorrow evening for a tour through Melted for Love with curator Angelikì Tzortzakàki.

Curious visitors, writers, researchers, students, and press – everyone is welcome. This is an opportunity to move through the exhibition slowly with others, guided by the curator.

We will share reflections on the video and sound works by Eglė Budvytytė, Eliana Otta, Kivu Ruhorahoza, Christian Nyampeta, and Nikolay Karabinovych, considering the threads that move through them: memory, grief, ancestral knowledge, and our relationship with the natural world.

Open to anyone who wishes to spend more time with the works, ask questions, and experience the exhibition through shared discussion rather than solitary viewing.

While the Sonic Acts Biennial is still up and running, come by to see Melted for Love at ROZENSTRAAT – a rose is a rose is a rose.

In the film installation WARMBLOODED AND EARTHBOUND, Eglė Budvytytė traces the symbiotic connections between bodies and the landscapes they inhabit. Moving across riverbanks, clay pits, and limestone quarries in Lithuania, the performers follow the contours of the environment. With their movements they initiate an intimate connection to the soil and air around them, gradually dissolving the boundary between body and earth.

The film was partly inspired by the ideas of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, whose research examined burial rituals in Neolithic matrilineal societies. Through this lens, Budvytytė reflects on ancient ways of understanding life, conveying a worldview in which the sacred and the everyday are deeply intertwined.

Rosebud #17 Christiaan Bastiaans
until 29.03

In Face to Face (1978), Christiaan Bastiaans lies in a natural setting, slowly covering himself in clay. As the layers build, his body begins to merge with the landscape – the clay’s color echoing the leaves around him. A small mirror covering his mouth reflects the surrounding environment, offering a glimpse of the world that simultaneously conceals and absorbs him.

An image that speaks of transience, dissolution, and continuity at once. As the body fades from view, the mirror returns the world to us, suggesting that life persists through what remains visible and unseen.

Rosebud #17 is presented alongside the exhibition Melted for Love, in which grief, memory, ancestral knowledge, and our relationship to nature emerge as central concerns.

Join us this Saturday for a special Sonic Acts event. The artists Katherina Gorodynska and Nikolay Karabinovych come together for an evening of performance and conversation.

Moving between Amsterdam and Odesa, they explore how memory shapes affective geographies between the two cities.

The evening begins with Open to Winds, a text-based performance by Gorodynska. Through performative weather observations, the artist suggests that intergenerational memory, like wind, travels through voice and everyday life. The work begins inside the exhibition and continues toward the canal, extending into the surrounding city.

The performance is followed by a conversation with the artists, led by curator Angeliki Tzortzakaki.

Nikolay Karabinovych’s sound walk ‘As I’m going to bed, I think of Kinkerstraat’ is presented as part of the exhibition. During the talk, he reflects on mapping Odesa’s ghost geography onto Amsterdam, tracing the echo of one city within another.
