The Mission of the Alexandria Museum of Art is to foster a healthy and culturally rich community by embracing change and using the power of art to educate, inspire and heal. Founded in 1977, AMoA has promoted understanding and appreciation of art through three decades of exhibits and educational outreach programs. The mission of AMoA is to preserve, exhibit, and promote visual art throughout Centr

al Louisiana in a way that contributes to the quality of life. AMoA entices visitors of diverse tastes with rotating exhibitions of art from our permanent collection, traveling exhibits from around the world, and exceptional contemporary artists. In an effort to become self sufficient and sustainable, the Alexandria Museum of Art endeavors to establish programming that is collaborative in nature, beneficial to the community, and advances our mission. The AMoA opened its doors in 1977 in the historic Rapides Bank Building (circa 1898). In 1998, AMoA expanded and constructed its grand foyer and offices as an annex to the the Rapides Bank Building. In 1999, AMoA was honored as an Outsanding Arts Organization in the Louisiana Governor's Arts Awards. In 2007, the Museum entered into a collaborative endeavor agreement with Louisiana State University of Alexandria, a move that has leveraged the assets and resources of both institutions in order to provide the most benefit to the community. AMoA now also serves as a downtown campus for LSUA classes, and is host to multidisciplinary community events, including concerts and recitals, the Cavanaugh Lecture Series, yoga classes, Second Saturday Markets, and Museum Afterhours. These events support all art forms – film, literature and poetry, songwriting and visual arts. The community-centered approach adopted by the museum proceeds from our mission; the AMoA desires to be the model of a learning and enrichment facility that reflects and exhibits the essence of the community and region that created it.

🖤❤️💛💚 Happy Juneteenth from the Alexandria Museum of Art! 💚💛❤️🖤

Today, we celebrate freedom, resilience, culture, and the enduring contributions of Black Americans whose creativity, leadership, and perseverance continue to shape our communities and our nation.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration.

At AMoA, we recognize the power of art to tell stories, preserve history, and inspire dialogue. We honor the artists, educators, and community members who help create a more inclusive and vibrant future for all.

Step into the role of a worldbuilder this summer at AMoA! During this week-long camp, Muse Teens will design their own imaginary worlds complete with geography, history, cultures, ecosystems, and more. Inspired by the techniques used by fantasy and science fiction authors, participants will bring entire worlds to life through creativity and imagination.
