“Soft Landscape,” from our current exhibition Evon Streetman: Reflections.

Evon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring, collage, airbrushing, and the application of gold and silver leaf.

Join us Tuesday evening for an exhibition walkthrough and artist talk with Tema Stauffer
Stauffer will discuss her series and current exhibition “Wonderlands”.

A closing reception will begin at 5:30pm with the talk at 6:00

In this series Stauffer documented sites relevant to Appalachian figures, such as Nina Simone and LloydChandler, she challenges romanticized notions, focuses on underrepresented histories of the region, and highlights the contradictions and complexities that shape its identity.

Two images from our current exhibition, Tema Stauffer: Wonderlands, through 8/22.

Through this environmental storytelling and evocative imagery, Stauffer examines themes of Americana through icons of tourism, faith, and folklore. Her photographs linger on liminal sites of transition and decay: abandoned churches, deteriorating roadside attractions, and architectural remnants that document shifting cultural values.

The exhibition is titled after Charles Baxter’s Wonderlands: Essays on the Life of Literature. Stauffer’s interest lies in places that evoke wonder, imbued with traces of historical upheaval, which carry into the present. Wonderlands is a portrait of a region where past and present are deeply intertwined

Throughout counties across western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southeastern Virginia,Wonderlands captures roadside attractions, religious symbols, relics, and landscapes that create a world both eerily still, and emotionally charged. The exhibition’s most recent works document the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and juxtapose scenes of destruction against enduring beauty, emphasizing resilience within these Appalachian communities.
