Updated spring reading group schedule! 📖

Next up on May 21, we’ll be discussing Anne Carson’s 1998 verse novel Autobiography of Red. This acclaimed work is a contemporary reimagining of the “Geryoneis,” a fragmentary Ancient Greek lyric poem.

Then, on June 4, we’ll close out the semester with “Mechanical Arts and the Promotion of the Anonymous,” a chapter from political philosopher Jacques Rancière’s 2004 book The Politics of Aesthetics.

Gitmo Baby by Isabelle Jansen (), a UB MFA thesis exhibition, opens this Friday (tomorrow!) in the .buffalo Project Space Gallery.

Before the world of finstas—private Instagrams specifically made for sh*tposting to a small social circle—there was the GeoCities personal homepage. These could be described as hybrids between social platforms and public diaries, both website and performance at once. This body of work is an accumulation of personal archival materials digitized into a 2000’s GeoCities homepage. By logging on to the domain, the viewer is able to explore this narrative performance of web-self within the artist’s fictionalized childhood bedroom, bringing the voyeurism of online social spaces into question and bending the rules of socially acceptable oversharing.

This Friday 7-10 at .buffalo project space!

Mise-en-Abyme emerges from two unholy creations in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: Dr. Frankenstein’s re-animating a body from stolen parts and Captain Walton’s reconstruction of Dr. Frankenstein’s story. Inspired by these parallel acts, the artists in Mise-en-Abyme each assembled a set of artifacts over the course of three readings of Frankenstein, then received a different artist’s fragments with which to reconstruct reality. The result is a body of work that brings new life to each other’s visions—though what form that life takes will be a mystery.

Ctrl+Print is a group exhibition exploring the intersection between digital and physical worldbuilding, curated by H Boone + Quincey Miracle. The show brings together zines, video, and video game projects responding to the idea of the technobody—where digital and physical hybridize.

This exhibition launches Major Glitch, a year-long experimental exhibition series at the Niagara Frontier Food Terminal featuring immersive installation, video art, and game design. The series explores the glitch as a tool for dismantling norms, amplifying othered perspectives, and activating new modes of play, embodiment, and space in South Buffalo.
