Book Arts

Located in the heart of downtown Buffalo, the WNY Book Arts Center is a community print shop and studio for letterpress, screen printing, book binding, paper making, calligraphy, origami, and more! We are a nonprofit organization and a working museum dedicated to preserving the book arts through collaboration and innovation, bridging antique equipment and processes with modern artmaking techniques

, and celebrating the heritage of Buffalo’s’ printing industry. We are proud to act as a hub to create and foster a collaborative community by providing opportunities to artists and educators, and all those in creative pursuits.

Book Arts members are dropping off their dynamic pieces for our 18th annual Members Show and we’re getting so amped! One of our most cherished events, we are continuously intrigued & delighted by the artwork our community of members submits each year.

We encourage all members to submit, and all forms of artwork & skill – from curious hobbyist to professional, any age – are welcome.

If you’re not yet a member, consider joining our vibrant collective of artists & makers, and submit your artwork for the show! (Drop-off deadline is May 30th.) Membership starts at just $50/year.

One exhibiting member will be selected for a solo exhibition in 2027. Jurying the show will be recent WNY Book Arts exhibiting artist A.P. Gorny.

An Opening Reception for our 18th Members Show, “Good Impressions,” will be held Saturday June 6th, 2026 between 11am-4pm during our Annual BookFest, a free and family friendly festival of hands-on art making workshops, celebrating all things print!

Many thanks to the creatively curious crew with WNY Prosperity Fellowship for visiting us today!

Book Arts Executive Director, Michael Bosworth, gave them a tour of the space and its history. Then they got a hands-on printing demo using historic copper plates from featuring a map of The Hydraulics district (now Larkinville) & got to take home custom prints made on Mandy the Mangler, one of our antique presses.

Get in touch if you’d like to schedule an interactive tour with us sometime!

Join us at our 15th annual Bookfest on June 6th to experience the annual event’s most beloved spectacle: STEAMROLLER PRINTMAKING — where a construction steamroller becomes a printing press, and artist-designed blocks get inked up for large-scale printing on the street!

Bring your own hoodie or shirt and get it steamroll-printed!

ps This is also an appreciation post for our Board President Jeff Sherven who you’ll see riding the steamroller in these pics over the years!

We’ve had so much fun running hands-on field trips lately! The gasp in this video from today makes our hearts sing!

Customizable letterpress, bookmaking, and screenprinting activities: our field trips are hands-on, fun, and open to all ages of learners. Whether you’re with a school and want to enrich your students’ studies, need that coveted Girl Scout badge, or want to take your staff on an interactive retreat, reach out if you’d like to learn more about the possibilities!

The rapid growth of technology and digital media makes it essential that our future generations understand the place printed words and books have in our past, present & future. Book arts are an incredible piece of living history we’d love for your students to experience!

Sharing a building, you also have the option to visit Book Arts and our upstairs neighbor org for a unique, two-part book arts + creative writing experience.

MORE ABOUT EXHIBITION
Alchemy & history, liminality & decay, nature & wonder, monsters & belonging, memory & light, unease & defiance. This group exhibition from WNY Book Arts Center affirms the complexity and prowess of artists who happen to also teach. The title of the show playfully challenges the erroneous old maxim that “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach” to remind us of the particular both/and-ness of artists who not only maintain their practice but generously encourage others to create their own.

Within its print studio and classroom, the Western New York Book Arts Center is privileged to share the talents of its teaching artists, creatives who engage in a wide range of artistic practices exploring painting, photography, monotype, collage, bookbinding, zine making, letterpress, screen printing, paper marbling, linoblock, collagraph, woodblock printing, etching, suminagashi and more. A part of the verdant artistic landscape of our region, they contribute to the benefit of numerous cultural organizations, colleges and schools as artists and educators.

Join us in celebrating these artists’ accomplishments, gain insight into their artistic dexterity and distinct creative expressions, and interact with this collaborative learning community.
