CHARLES LEMAIRE visited Chesterfield many times. He was a friend of Madame Sherri and was also an important part of the story of who she was... yet, he was a bigger personality in his own right. As more of his story is revealed, we will try to share it with you here, especially those portions connected to Chesterfield. Special Thanks to Richard Adkins for his hard work and effort to preserve this history.

In 1962, Charles LeMaire, Broadway designer and later head of wardrobe and Executive Designer at 20th Century Fox, began writing his autobiography. The book would cover his childhood to his passing (1887-1985). He wrote the book out in excerpts and anecdotes. He worked with an editor and a typist, but they were only able to complete through the year 1943. I purchased the unpublished and incomplete manuscript at auction in 2017, and from Charles' remaining handwritten notes and assorted unedited typewritten pages, completed the autobiography. Charles' wish was to see it done and to properly place him in the context of both theatre and film costume design. Anyone who can add information to this work, is more than welcome to do so, acknowledging that not everything will be added - Thanks, Richard Adkins.
