Stetson Universityโ€™s Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center houses the universityโ€™s extensive collection of art by Modernist painter Oscar Bluemner (1867-1938). Longtime trustee and alumna Dolly Hand โ€™49 and her husband, Homer Hand, made the lead gift for the art center, which is located between Sampson Hall and the duPont-Ball Library. The Oscar Bluemner Collection, which contains more than 1,000 pieces

, was bequeathed to Stetson University in 1997 by the artistโ€™s daughter, Vera Bluemner Kouba. Selections from the Vera Bluemner Kouba Collection have been exhibited at Stetson University and at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. The Hand Art Center is a secure, permanent, state-of-the-art facility for the Bluemner collections and a place to share with art historians, scholars, students and art lovers.

From now until October 3, visit the Duncan Gallery Vitrines in Stetson Universityโ€™s Sampson Hall Foyer to view โ€œWe Threeโ€ and โ€œVacationโ€ by Studio Art alumna Jaclyn Miller. Both mixed media pieces were produced in 2009. They were accessioned into the Permanent Collection of the Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center through the Elizabeth Knight Sumner Purchase Award.

Artist Statement: The current American populace has been well trained by the media to be familiar with and vicariously place itself within the fictional situations it sees through its TV screens. I chose to use this ease of projection onto a different reality as a means to get my viewers connected to the work in my exhibition. The images on the sets are archetypal; hairstyles, clothing, and posture all suggest how to read the situations provided. However, by replacing facial expressions and skin tones with the eerie quality of television static, the images become somewhat anonymous and more open to interpretation. My hope is that those visiting the show will come armed with their own banks of experiences that can be superimposed onto the work either by recognizing a particular event or by using their past to create a new narrative for the images shown.

Interpretation by Jett Scheingoltz: Jacelyn Millerโ€™s piece is a beautifully painted portrait of people with diverse backgrounds on screens of old TVs, ones that didnโ€™t usually produce color images. Thereโ€™s something compelling about the old pieces of wood and warped plastic being used as a frame. The almost pastel colors and effortless palette give the piece an almost monochromatic look. Within each composition is a dream-like scene of all people from all kinds of backgrounds, ages, and situations. In Millerโ€™s statement about Tune in/out she comments on our perception of our own lives๏ฟฝthrough the eye of media and television.
