Our collections management team recently cleaned this rhodochrosite, removing a layer of mineral oxides on the surface as well as several decades' worth of dust that accumulated during the time it was stored in the Museum's attic. This larger-than-life rhodochrosite is one of the specimens featured in Colossal Crystals, a brand-new exhibit opening on September 10, 2026.

A group of Stetson alumni and friends just returned from an amazing trip to Costa Rica led by Gillespie Museum director Kristen Marshall Mattson. We explored several national parks from the cloud forest to the coast and saw sloths, toucans, monkeys, hummingbirds, and more! Our guides Fico and Ricardo of Costa Rica Ecoadventures were fantastic, the food was amazing, and the camaraderie was the best.

The trip was coordinated by the Gillespie Museum, Alumni Engagement, and WORLD. Many thanks to them for making this trip happen.

Check out the Gillespie Museum during Museum Month!

As Stetson University’s "Museum of the Earth," this site features a native Florida landscape and the largest gem and mineral collection in the Southeast United States. Their current featured exhibit, Minerals of the Tri-State Mining District, showcases geologically significant specimens from the historic lead and zinc mining region of Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas.

Museum Month is happening now through June 5! Grab your Bingo passport and visit local museums to start collecting stamps along the way. When you complete a Bingo, redeem your passport at the West Volusia Visitor Center or the Museum Store at the Museum of Art – DeLand for your sticker sheet. Every Bingo you complete also gets you an entry into a prize drawing for museum swag!
