A piece of Fort Lauderdale history—rebuilt, reimagined, and still standing.

What many people pass today on SE 3rd Ave began its life in 1922 as St. Anthony’s, Broward County’s very first Catholic church, originally located at Las Olas Blvd. Built in a striking Romanesque stone style rarely seen in South Florida, it stood as a landmark of early community life.

But its story didn’t end there.
In the late 1940s, the entire structure was sold for just $1 to a Lutheran congregation and moved—stone by stone—to its current location. Rededicated in 1949 as the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, it continued serving the community for decades.

Fast forward to 2017, when the building faced possible demolition. After a strong preservation effort, it was officially recognized for its historic significance, saving its iconic exterior.

Today, the building lives on in a different form—its preserved shell now part of a restaurant and nightlife space, blending Fort Lauderdale’s past with its present. As of 2025 it is operating as Jay's Steakhouse and has previously been known as The Angeles and Holly Blue.

From sacred space to social space, this structure has witnessed a century of transformation.

Isn't history interesting!
