A FEW INTERESTING MANUSCRIPTS.
May 27th, 7:30 THEATRE OF MEMORY

Until our lifetime ONLY hardcopies existed - beyond memory and oral tradition of course. Examining the written record from the last several centuries reveals that the medium as well as the message can be of great interest and redolent of time and place. Shown here is a sign up sheet for a new improved kind of penmanship in the 19th century. Join us as we peruse the past. Admission is free but an RSVP to theatreofmemory.org under EVENTS will get you a seat at the table. Only a few seats left!

NERD NIGHT The Novel April 29, 7:30 THEATRE OF MEMORY

The French came up with a new (novel) form of literary expression that spread around the world. Pictured here is The Great Scanderberg from 1690, “Done out of French.” It would be a page turner, if the pages weren’t so delicate in their 336th year. Some novels are profoundly durable in more ways than one. Some are archaic and forgotten. All had their day. Let’s look! My color commentator for this is my brother-in-arms, novelist Joe Haldeman. Admission is free. If you’ll RSVP at theatreofmemory.org under EVENTS we’ll save you a seat at the table.

ERIC DIAMOND at the THEATRE OF MEMORY April 18th at 7:30

Eric Diamond, guitarist, songwriter, and poet, is returning to the Theatre of Memory on April 18th at 7:30. A regular at the Theatre of Memory, he will be offering an eclectic program of original songs, in a variety of styles and rhythms. It will be my job to provide percussion “flying in on a wing and a prayer” for some, and I look forward to it. Seating is limited, but tickets are available at theatreofmemory.org under EVENTS. And remember that each event is a fundraiser to keep the doors open and the A/C on, so bring a friend!

THEATRE OF MEMORY IS CLOSED
FOR EMERGENCY REPAIRS

If you were here last Saturday night you might have sensed that some critter crawled under the Museum to breathe his last. Today the air in the Theatre of Memory is unbreathable. The critter remover and ductwork guys are coming Friday. Meanwhile, the building is uninhabitable.

NERD NIGHT Wood February 25th, 7:30
at the THEATRE OF MEMORY

Wood is so prevalent in our environment that we scarcely notice it. Let’s take a closer look at fossilized, ancient and contemporary crafted wood in its many forms. It’s amazing to even approach the subject and the collection is certainly not exhaustive. Hopefully, though, after this introduction you’ll see it everywhere with new eyes. Pictured here is a Chinese deity and his doggy. Admission is free, but please RSVP at theatreofmemory.org under EVENTS and we’ll save you a seat at the table.

BEN COSGROVE IS BACK! FEBRUARY 14th, 7:30
at the THEATRE OF MEMORY

If you caught his wonderful show last year, he needs no introduction. Otherwise, Ben Cosgrove is a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape, place, and environment. Described by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter… [using] his piano as a paintbrush,” Ben travels widely and creates beauty wherever he goes. Ben has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists, contributed music to several radio and film projects (including the recent Ken Burns documentary The American Buffalo), and held residencies and fellowships with institutions including NASA, the National Park Service, the National Forest Service, Harvard University, the Schmidt Ocean Institute, and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. We’re really excited to have him here at the Theatre of Memory. Tickets are available at theatreofmemory.org under EVENTS.

NERD NIGHT Revolutionary Ephemera January 28th, 7:30 THEATRE OF MEMORY

Now that Ken Burns has given you the structure and timeline of those momentous years, come and examine the documents and manuscripts that more clearly show the daily life of the colonists. This should help to fill in the gaps in our perception of a bygone era. Pictured here is a document from 1797 recording that Hannah Claflen, wife of Rufus Claflen was guilty of "Swearing one profane Oath in the following words - by Heaven." Though no mention is made of the punishment meted out, the traditional punishment was to stand in a public place with a clothespin on the tongue for a specified period of time. Admission is free, but please RSVP at theatreofmemory.org under EVENTS and we’ll save you a seat at the table.
