Galveston has a long history of honoring the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Check out these photographs from the Galveston and Texas History Center's Special Collections.

The first shows the American Legion dedication ceremony for the World War I memorial in Menard Park, circa 1927.

The second includes members of veterans groups fundraising for a World War II memorial in Galveston in 1949.

The third is a photograph of Lt. Marion Lee β€œSandy” Kempner, son of Harris and Ruth Kempner, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965 to serve in the Vietnam War. This photograph shows him wearing his Purple Heart, which he was awarded in October 1966 for an injury he sustained the previous September. Sandy was killed in Vietnam on Nov. 11, 1966. His legacy is honored daily at the Rosenberg Library with a reading room named after him on our second floor that's dedicated to his memory.

We remember. ❀️

Have you saved the date? June will include a VERY special one-day-only children's event! πŸ¦–πŸ¦•πŸ¦–

Mark your calendars for 11 AM to 5 PM Thursday, June 25th. We're bringing the Dinosaur George Traveling Museum to Galveston! It's too big to fit in our library, so Galveston's Wright Cuney Recreation Center has agreed to host it! One of our children's team members will be on-site the entire time. ✨

Did you know today is National Kiss a Frog Day? 🐸 Kiss a frog and find your happily-ever-after, or so the story goes. The Brothers Grimm published "The Frog Prince" in 1812, popularizing legends of enchanted frogs which are still popular in today’s culture.

The following are frog-related items we have in our museum's collection, including a Navajo Indian frog-shaped stone carving with painted black eyes, a 1942 princess and the frog doll, and an American Cancer Society button. You can learn more about these items and more by searching the Rosenberg Library Museum's website: https://rosenberg-library-museum.org/
