A childhood memory of his grandmother sewing on her porch led Michigan artist Ray Materson to invent an extraordinary medium while incarcerated: palm-sized embroideries made from unraveled sock threads.

Read more from Grand Rapids Magazine, and see 'Ray Materson: Metamorphosis' at GRAM through Jan 3, 2027:

Ray Materson makes art with socks—though you’d never guess it from a first glance.

Artist Julie Green (1961-2021) spent 22 years painting nearly 1,000 ceramic plates that illustrated the last meals of people on death row in the United States. Now on view at GRAM, The Last Supper marks the first time the full installation has been exhibited in Grand Rapids.

Through our basic need for food and our rituals associated with it, Green invites us to consider the U.S. prison system and the way we think about those who are within it.

Experience Julie Green: The Last Supper Oct 3, 2026 – Oct 24, 2027 at GRAM. https://www.artmuseumgr.org/exhibitions/julie-green-the-last-supper

Opening Oct 3 at GRAM, Ray Materson: Metamorphosis features intimate embroideries stitched by hand from unraveled sock threads—a medium the artist invented while incarcerated.

What started as small gestures of community and survival became a sustained artistic vision encompassing portraiture, personal memory, Americana, theater, and fantasy.
