At Cocoon Art Space we thrive on helping artists grow! Over the past few years we have witnessed emerging artists develop their skills, offering amazing works of art to the local art scene.

"In Progress" provides a glimpse into the creative process these artists use to complete a piece of work. It features unfinished works alongside finished works which is a rare opportunity to view a piece as it nears completion.

See these artists' works on display through June 4.

‼️BIG NEWS‼️

After three and a half years at 327 Division Ave S, Cocoon Art Space is closing its current location and moving to 1509 Lake Dr SE. This move will enable us to continue our mission of supporting local artistic expression and helping creatives grow.

1509 Lake Dr SE was last occupied by Rainbow Resources, a stained-glass shop that served Grand Rapids for many years. We are honored to carry on the legacy of a creative, small, locally owned business.

Our team has already started preparing the new space for our Grand Re-Opening on May 1, 2026. Our last day in our current space is April 3, 2026: we will be open that evening from 6pm to 9pm.

We are looking forward to sustaining the success we've built over the past three and a half years as a gallery and artisan goods shop. We are excited to transform, expand and grow our current offerings and feature more new art works by Michigan artists and makers.

We are extremely grateful for our loyal customers and supportive community who encourage us to continue evolving our business and being a creative hub for gathering, creating and growing. It is our hope to be a destination for residents and visitors in Eastown for years to come!

Corridors of Color with Hannah🌟

Fantastic opening night with artist Hannah Gregus during March First Friday at Cocoon. Friends, family and admirers of Hannah's art gathered to celebrate her newly released collection of art.

"I am a watercolorist creating abstract, meditative works through the interaction of
shape, color, and pattern. Inspired by organic shapes and their natural imperfections,
I strive to balance structure and spontaneous movement within each piece.
Employing the transparent nature of watercolor, I layer colors to create harmony with
the shapes, keeping my colors concentrated to maintain vibrancy while painting
meticulously with small brushes.

Growing up in the Michigan countryside, I was surrounded by nature and my
mother’s beautiful flower gardens which fascinated me with the shapes of the leaves
and colors of the petals. Her quilting, and an endless supply of interesting fabrics,
sparked my love for patterns. These early experiences were the beginning of my
passion for colors, shapes and patterns." --- Hannah

Hannah's work is available at Cocoon year round. Corridors of Color is on display through March 29, 2026.

"Creating with clay is a meditative practice that brings me a sense of emotional peace and physical healing. Through my art I seek to explore self-transformation through my bond with nature while also encouraging others to look inward and discover their own connection.

Community came from my journey to finding and embracing community. When I moved to the west side of Michigan, I didn’t know anyone and had to put myself out there in order to build friendships. In doing that, I discovered a loving community that became my anchor and continues to help me grow."

Hannah's goal is for viewers to be intrigued by her pieces and spend time with them. From the small details, vibrant colors, imperfections and movement, she paints to create an imaginative world for the viewer to become lost in a visual landscape. Through her work, she endeavors to connect with viewers and allow them to see something different in the piece, engaging their senses beyond representational work.

Sculptural works by Robyn Smith

Robyn's creative practice is an exploration of our connection to the natural world through visual storytelling. Working with stoneware clay, she combines sculpture with illustration using the mishima technique, and watercolor-like underglaze painting to subtly share overlooked details in our world.

Story behind the artwork:

Robyn had an idea to create multiple pieces, each showcasing a keystone species. Knowing these plants and animals are critical to our environment, she wants to shed light on them and the species and habitats they provide for, including humans.

Honeybees create a biodiverse ecosystem through pollination, helping many plant varieties thrive which in turn creates habitats and food for many species of birds, insects, and other wildlife. Humans also rely heavily on the honeybee for food sources.

Up Next at Cocoon: Corridors of Color, a solo exhibit by Hannah Gregus

Come to Cocoon in March and explore Hannah Gregus’ Corridors of Color, a truly beautiful display of colors, shapes and patterns. In this watercolor exhibit Hannah engages the viewer to think about the relationship between color, shape and pattern and how when carefully placed they can elicit a range of responses. Will you feel harmony, tension or something new? Hannah masterfully and meticulously plays with layers of color, fine lines and organic shapes while simultaneously captivating the observer’s eye and mind. Movement, balance and explosions of color come together in this sweet and truly meditative solo art show.
