Mounted on a wooden platform, the sculpture features an opening lined with gold leaf, emitting a quiet radiance when illuminated. Fine fractures on its surface reveal a moment of rupture.
Blown down and shattered during strong winds around the time of the Lahaina fires, the work was later restored using 24-karat gold leaf from Kanazawa, applied in a manner reminiscent of kintsugi.
Rather than simply repairing the damage, the artist transformed the piece into a renewed work—one that embodies both fracture and regeneration. Rooted in Japanese aesthetics and shaped by Hawaiʻi’s natural environment, his practice embraces transformation as an essential part of an object’s life.
