“These destruct vessels were developed while learning how to use plaster molds to make slip-casted forms. As I practiced, I noticed imperfections appearing. Typically, this is not what you want, and the blemished, cracked, or incomplete castings are discarded. But then, I realized that the imperfections almost added a somehow pleasing look; character, if you will. I then realized that I inherently disliked slip-casted forms. To me, the repetition and perfect nature of a replica ironically seem less valuable and even offensive to the idea of having something genuine. So, instead of perfection, I chose to pursue imperfection. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say: a unique blend of the two.

In the end, I find these forms to be soothing and captivating. Somehow, the clashing aesthetics make fertile ground for metaphorical narrative as well as meditation.”

“‘Niu ~’ chandelier wind chime is a ceramic sculpture honoring the coconut (niu), a Hawaiian symbol of life, resilience, abundance, and the profound connection between people and land. Traditionally valued as the ""tree of life"" for its diverse uses in food, shelter, and crafts, the niu inspires this hanging sculpture's organic forms and graceful movement, evoking coconuts swaying in the island breeze. The gentle chimes foster a dynamic interplay between art and nature. Through the medium of clay, I explore the elements of earth, water, fire, and air, creating unique, handmade pieces that mirror nature's individuality. This artwork, through its movement, sound, and form, celebrates the Hawaiian principle of mālama ʻāina—caring for the land that sustains us.”

It's ! Today we're introducing you to Jennifer Fujimoto , an Oahu-based ceramicist.

Jennifer creates whimsical ceramic art and functional decor inspired by Japanese folk art, specifically Kokeshi dolls - simple wooden dolls from Japan, characterized by elegant and minimalist designs. Her art conveys themes rooted in her mixed-race heritage and the universal desire to form and keep relationships with others. It features delightfully expressive faces and simple line art with bold splashes of color and references traditional Japanese and European design elements.

According to Jennifer, “My work is formed using traditional ceramic techniques. Most pieces are wheel-thrown from stoneware or porcelain, then trimmed by hand. Some include hand-built and altered parts. I then paint, carve, and inlay colored underglazes on the pieces before firing. I play with form, color, and symbol, layering and repeating until my individual visual language unfolds.”

“‘Twilight’ is a thrown stoneware piece with a colored mica infused sodium silicate surface. It was fired and smoked in the raku technique. The intention is to find balance between the volcanic forces of the earth and the ocean that surrounds us, nurtures us and unites us.”

“I began this piece with the spiral in the center. As it grew, I found rhythms in the form as I wove back and forth, and up and down. In the process, I became lost, my thoughts wandering within the rhythms. I felt like I was missing a sense of form and that I needed a line or a corner to find my way. Then, the idea of a compass came to mind, and I wove four corners and four directions. This artwork reminded me that I have a compass in my heart, and I can find my way as long as I know where I am. My finger weaving starts with gathering the plants and extracting the fiber. Coconut fiber is pounded and separated from the husk. Sansevieria fiber is extracted after scraping the flesh off the plants. Hau fiber is stripped from the pith of the branches. I create my envisioned designs by combining traditional fiber skills with my own self-taught weaving technique.”

That’s a wrap!

The Annual Statewide Exhibition has been packed up and is making its way to Maui. Thank you to everyone on Oahu who stopped by the exhibition Art Center to support our exhibiting artists and see this incredible collection of work in person.

And a huge mahalo to the Hawaiʻi Craftsmen team and all of our amazing volunteers who gave their time, their energy, and their care to making the Oahu showing everything it was — and who showed up one more time to help us pack it down.

Meet our latest artist: glass artist and Hawaiʻi Island native Nash Adams-Pruitt , whose borosilicate flameworked glass work has been featured at exhibitions across the state.

Nash Adams-Pruitt grew up in Volcano, Hawaiʻi. He has been a full-time borosilicate glass artist since 2013, focusing on functional glass sculpture informed by surreal, multi-dimensional, and naturalistic inspiration. His practice emphasizes the creation of unique, constantly evolving works, each piece reflecting a commitment to variation, exploration, and the expressive potential of form and material regardless of medium.

““Finding Lucky Clovers” hides a few four-leaf clovers among hundreds of clover leaves. Inspired by the childhood joy of finding a four-leaf clover, it invites viewers to slow down and experience the simple joy of discovering a little luck.

This work is part of my Modern Botanical series. I combine flowers, fruits, seeds, and leaves to create botanical forms of plants that may have existed, may exist, or may yet come into being. Rather than showing tropical plants as they are, I transform Hawaiʻi’s atmosphere, memories, and cultural diversity into botanical forms.

Hand-built in porcelain and finished with multiple firings.”

“Carving “Mother” was started as an exercise in the abstract form of wood grain, and turned into an intimate reflection on my relationship with my own mother. Within the labor of carving koa wood, whose name signifies strength, were mirrored the perseverance and strength of the woman who brought me into this world. And just like my relationship with my mother, this carving was challenging, but I am grateful and better for it. I love you mom.”
