Georgian Museum

Georgian Museum This Lancaster landmark mansion built in 1832 is one of the finest house museums in Ohio. Open Wednesday - Sunday. Tours begin at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm.

Built originally for Samuel and Sarah Maccracken in 1832, this handsome Federal home of brick and native limestone is furnished today as it would have been in the 1830s with some original pieces and many furnishings made by Fairfield County artisans. Located in one of Lancaster's three National Historic Districts, this outstanding example of American and Georgian architecture has Regency features,

the most prominent of which is a double curved wall with bay windows along the two-storied west portico that is supported by five fluted Ionic columns. Throughout the house 12-foot high ceilings draw eyes upward to the beautiful woodwork, archways and chandeliers An unsupported spiral stairway leading up three floors is highlighted at the top by a lantern light in the central gable. A 45-minute guided tour of this 13-room home includes stories about the influential families who resided here and the early Lancaster community that grew from a frontier town to a city. The museum gift shop is open year round, Monday through Friday, 9:30am to 4:30pm. It features many Lancaster- and Fairfield County-inspired items, history books and many items made by local artisans. Parking is available behind the Georgian Museum. Please come to the back door and press the Ring Doorbell to go shopping.
