Happy Fun Fact Friday!!!

Bread has been a staple since the beginning of human civilization and throughout history, there have been numerous ways to prepare it. On display in our exhibit gallery is a book Jackson’s wife, Mary Anna, owned and where she compiled recipes given to her.

Contained in this cookbook are numerous recipes for various types of breads. Anywhere from cornbread, Cottage bread, St. Charles bread or biscuits. Below is a newspaper clipping recipe for “Good Bread” Mary Anna had stored in her cookbook made with potatoes, flour and hop tea.

Today is World Beard Day and it is the perfect time to show off our All About the Beard products in our Museum Store!

Thomas Jackson's beard progression started upon his arrival to Lexington in 1851, as a clean shaven young man just leaving his duties as a soldier. It didn't take long for the young Jackson to begin growing his iconic beard while he was a professor here at VMI.

Later, upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Jackson's beard became the iconic image we think of today.
