Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day?

Before the holiday and name became federally codified in 1971, the holiday began as a yearly tradition following the end of the Civil War in 1865. The first official Decoration Day was commemorated at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868.

Communities honored those who died in service by holding parades through town to their cemeteries to decorate veterans' gravesites.
