This remarkable WWII snapshot shows a tank-loading operation aboard USS LST 525.

Commissioned in December 1943, LST 525 served in the European Theater and participated in the Normandy and Southern France amphibious operations.

The photograph survives alongside candid crew snapshots and the ship’s engineering logbook in our collection.

Built to carry war straight onto a beach, USS LST 393 earned three battle stars in WWII for Sicily, Salerno, and Normandy. She reached the Omaha Beach area during the D-Day operation and ultimately made 30 round trips to Normandy, hauling troops, vehicles, and supplies into France and carrying wounded men and prisoners back to England.

More than 80 years later, this combat veteran survives in Muskegon.

In 2025, we had just 4 museum members. In 2026, that number has exploded to 1,096 members (and counting).

Every membership helps preserve this ship, protect her history, and keep the stories of the men and women who served alive for another generation.

A huge thank you to our Top Five Front Desk Volunteers at the 393: Brent, Ron, Larry, Rob, and John. Together, they gave 252 hours welcoming visitors, answering questions, telling the ship’s story, and keeping the museum moving.
