Muskegon Museum of History & Science http://www.lakeshoremuseum.org/ Visitors of all ages will enjoy hands-on fun in several galleries.

The Mission of the Muskegon Museum of History & Science is to tell the story of Muskegon County by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of its people and natural environment. The museum explores 400,000 million years of Michigan in the making and features a life-sized mastodon and mastodon bones found in nearby Rothbury. Admission is free for Muskegon County residents and $5 for non-residents.

Mary Scott Wood (1884–1936), a Chicago Art Institute graduate from a prominent Muskegon family, married Joseph Davis Bicknell (1870–1936), director of the Hackley Manual Training School. Their intimate home wedding at 207 W. Webster Avenue hosted 70 close guests. Mary wore a white marquisette and satin dress with point lace, carrying white swainsona. The couple shared 26 years together and were avid golfers. Following a long illness, Mary passed away at age 52 on May 20, 1936. Joseph suffered a fatal heart attack just two months later on July 18, aged 66, at the Pontaluna Golf Course. At his funeral, Reverend Samuel Oliver memorably compared the inseparable couple to the biblical figures Elijah and Elisha, crossing the River Jordan hand in hand.

Since May, families have been following Nature Cat outdoors for muddy discoveries, backyard investigations, and hands-on fun. And the adventure wraps up September 12!

We are excited to once again partner with Michigan Irish Music Festival to run the Wee Ones area! Come down and see us for a fun craft, scavenger hunt, and more! Admission for kids 12 and under is free! The tent will be open:

Friday, Sept. 18, 6-8pm

Dr. Siegfried W. Thieme (1880-1966) wore a full-length bear-fur coat while making house calls in winter. He opened his practice in 1907. At the time, he was the only physician in Ravenna.

Before cars, he used a horse and carriage. During the 1918 flu epidemic, he would even travel on skis to reach patients. He delivered an estimated 3,000 babies, including 13 sets of twins and 1 set of triplets.

Dr. Thieme was devoted to his work and patients. He never ran for public office and gave up playing baseball and golf. The only activity he made time for was voting at every election.

In 1949, Dr. Thieme was named Doctor of the Year by the Muskegon County Medical society. After he retired, he was celebrated at the 1956 Ravenna Homecoming. He was honored as the village’s “most valued” resident.

His bear fur coat can currently be seen in the Muskegon County History Gallery.
