Did you know on this day in history, April 24, 1959, Captain John Stanley Lappo, a United States Air Force pilot, flew a Strategic Air Command Boeing RB-47E Stratojet under the Mackinac Bridge?

The gap between the bridge and the water is 155 feet, and Captain Lappo flew under the bridge at 75 feet. A sense of adventure and a prolonged desire to fly under a large bridge is what prompted him to take the risk. Captain Lappo was later charged and fined for the incident.
