How do Chinese ink artists learn how to paint? In FQMโs AWNY exhibition for this fall, ๐ผ ๐๐๐ก๐ก ๐ค๐ ๐๐ค๐ช๐๐, ๐ ๐๐ก๐ค๐ฌ๐๐ง ๐ค๐ ๐๐ค๐ง๐ฉ๐ช๐ฃ๐: ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐ง๐ฃ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ ๐พ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐จ๐ ๐๐ก๐ค๐ฌ๐๐ง ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐, we reconstruct a classroom through textual and material references given by the artworks to revive the traditional Chinese way of passing down artistic knowledge through generations. In a wide range of drawings and paintings, we present the ่ฏพ (lesson) and ่ฐฑ (lineage) that tie generations of artists together.
The exhibition centers on the flower paintings of Li Fenggong (1884-1967), a painter and an educator, who followed the traditional way of pedagogy through teacherโs demonstration, apprenticeโs studies, and teacherโs annotation. Li and fellow apprenticesโ lineage can be traced to the Changzhou School and Yangzhou School developed around the first half of the 18th century, and later passed and evolved to the Lingnan School of Liโs based Canton region in early 20th century.
