๐Ÿ›ถ Shen Zhouโ€™s album leaves record scenes encountered during his travels along the Grand Canal โ€” rivers opening into quiet distances, temple compounds nestled among trees, boats drifting through misty waters. Each page feels like a small pause along the journey. ๐ŸŒซ๏ธโ›ฐ๏ธ

For Zhang Xiaoli, these paintings became a starting point for translation. Using LEGOยฎ bricks as her visual language, she reconstructs Shen Zhouโ€™s mountains, architecture, trees, and figures into modular forms while preserving the rhythm and spatial flow of the original compositions. ๐Ÿงฑ๐ŸŒฟ

Rooflines stretch outward, paths wind through the image, clouds gather and dissolve. Rather than copying the paintings directly, the works move between two visual systems โ€” ink and brick, softness and structure, tradition and play. โœจ

It is a human intellectual tendency to turn chaos into order. As suggested by the French philosopher Quentin Meillassouxโ€™s critique of โ€œcorrelationism,โ€ when we understand sublime systems such as the universe or nature, we tend to translate them first into a logic in a language we can understand, rather than directly immersing ourselves in them. Zhang Xiaoliโ€™s Three Realms may be an example of the latter approach. Depicting an abstract monochrome landscape of swirls, fingerprint-shaped spirals, flowing streams, and materials that drip, form, and morph, the painter understands nature as a chaotic space for materials.

Like a Mรถbius strip, matter in this conduit has a circular lifespan. Birthing from each other, merging into each other, and transforming into multiple new matter, Zhangโ€™s forms expose an eternity not of the materials but of the underlying yet non-figurative law of nature that transcends human logic.

In traditional Chinese painting, learning often begins through copying. Students first study printed manuals, then original works, and eventually nature itself. The Qing-dynasty Mustard Seed Garden Manual transformed this process into a systematic visual grammar, breaking landscape painting into elements such as rocks, trees, branches, and figuresโ€”each with prescribed methods of brushwork and composition. Through this structure, nature became organized into a symbolic visual language. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ“–

In the Le Garden Manuscript series, Zhang Xiaoli treats LEGOยฎ bricks as a parallel visual system, translating the original manual page by page into the logic of LEGOยฎ. Elements once painted with ink and brush are reconstructed through modular plastic forms, rendered in dry-brush white lines that echo the texture of the original woodblock prints. ๐Ÿงฉโ›ฐ๏ธ

For the text sections, Zhang developed an invented pictographic language called โ€œLEGOยฎ Script,โ€ inspired by the forms of the bricks themselves. Drawing from cross-cultural communication, multilingual translation, and even emoji, the script imagines a playful visual language that moves across linguistic boundaries. Rather than following a fixed code, the script evolved organically during the making process, with meanings shifting and transforming over time. โœจ๐Ÿ”ค

๐Ÿงฉ This work unfolds like a visual experiment built around contrast. In the upper section, familiar elements from traditional Chinese landscape paintingโ€”rocks, trees, and tiny wandering figuresโ€”are broken down into individual components. Below, Zhang Xiaoli rebuilds these same motifs using LEGOยฎ bricks.

โ›ฐ๏ธ But this isnโ€™t simply a playful side-by-side comparison. The work brings together two different ways of engaging with tradition. One grows through repetition and intuition, much like the long practice of copying historical paintingsโ€”learning to see through the eyes of earlier masters and paint through their hands. The other approach is more analytical: observing, translating, taking apart, and rebuilding. By turning mountains, rocks, and pictorial forms into modular LEGO structures, Zhang creates a conversation between these two methods, highlighting both their differences and surprising similarities.

In this process, imitation becomes something more creativeโ€”an act of choosing, assembling, and reinventing. The colorful bricks gradually form their own visual language within the theatrical world Zhang constructs, echoing the real landscapes they reference while inviting viewers to step into the unfolding stage of the travellerโ€™s playful journey.

On Manhattanโ€™s Upper East Side, a theatre built from LEGOยฎ unfoldsโ€”where you become the traveller. In this second solo exhibition at FQM, Zhang Xiaoli reimagines the visual language of Chinese landscape painting through play, translation, and reconstruction.

Structured in four actsโ€”Prologue, Scenes, Open Rehearsal, and Into the Playโ€”the exhibition moves between classical sources and contemporary experimentation. From her self-developed โ€œLEGOยฎ-script,โ€ inspired by the Mustard Seed Garden Manual, to AI-assisted works that introduce chance and fragmentation, Zhangโ€™s practice bridges tradition and invention.

As the artist works on-site and invites participation, the boundary between viewer and maker begins to dissolve. Here, landscape is not only depicted, but continuously rebuilt.
