The Oxford Museum continues the celebration of our country’s 250th with more events. Next up, in partnership with the Oxford Community Center, is a presentation by Food Historian and cookbook author, Joyce White. Ms. White will speak about food in the Colonial days. You’ll likely get hungry, so in addition, a food tasting is included: a buffet from the time prepared by Momma Maria’s. There will also be a cash bar with historic cordials. The film is set in the summer of the American Revolution, following the heated political debates in the Continental Congress over declaring independence. Blending historical dialogue with song, it reimagines the personalities and compromises behind the founding document.

Saturday night, date night: come on out to the Oxford Town Hall. Lucinda Dukes Edinberg, curator of the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis, will be lecturing on Commerce & Decorative Arts of Colonial America. The Hammond-Harwood House is a National Historic Landmark, built in 1774 and is known for its decorative arts collection. Much of the collection was imported from England, Europe, and China by way of ship into various Maryland ports. Ms. Edinberg will speak about some of the highlights of the collection and their importance in the history of American decorative arts.

The Oxford Museum is partnership with the Town of Oxford for this event, as we continue to celebrate the 250th birthday of our country. Registration is required.

The Oxford Museum, in partnership with the Oxford Community Center, is cooking up another evening to celebrate the 250th year of our country. We are bringing cookbook author and historian Joyce M. White to speak about food in the Colonial days. You’ll likely get hungry, so in addition, a food tasting is included: a buffet from the time prepared by Momma Maria’s. Joyce White is a food historian, educator, and consultant specializing in historic foodways and material culture. Her passion for food history began in the late 1980s while she was a museum education intern at the Geneva Historical Society’s Rose Hill Mansion in New York’s Finger Lakes region. There, she first brought history to life in the kitchen, portraying an 1840s kitchen maid and cooking period recipes—often alongside every fourth-grade class in the county. The Patriot vs. Loyalist Debate was presented by the Oxford Museum to a full house at St. Pauls Church in Oxford, MD on Saturday night, August 1st. The debate featured Patriot Edward Lloyd IV portrayed by Mickey Te***ne and Tory James Tighlman portrayed by David Poe. The setting was a tavern where both debated their views, fears, and expectations regarding the Revolutionary War. Mickey and David dressed in period clothes. Art Murr served as the moderator from the present time, posing questions, offering perspectives, and kept the debate on track, on time, and without bloodshed.

Art, Mickey, and David put on an informative and entertaining show. They told the story of the Revolutionary War as it affected Oxford and our country, and they told it in a manner that was relatable and educational. They didn’t do it alone; we know that. Thanks go not only to those three, but also to their support team (we know who you are, wives and Oxford Museum members). Kudos to our special guest Town Crier, David Rose, who brought the crowds in.

Look, here comes August! With it comes more Oxford Museum excitement. This Saturday, the 1st of August, the museum will take you back in time to the 1700’s and the American Revolution. St Paul’s Church (thank you, Jenny) will be the venue, set as a tavern. Our neighbors and friends, Mickey Te***ne, Dave Poe and Art Murr will be acting out the scene of a debate between a Patriot and a Loyalist. I’ll let you guess who plays Patriot Edward Lloyd IV and Loyalist Tory James Tighlman, and who is the moderator? Come find out and hear the views, fears, and expectations around the Revolutionary War at that time. Hoping the moderator can keep the debate calm and without bloodshed.

Last night the Oxford Museum united the past with the present in our presentation of the 2026 Douglas Hanks, Jr Oxford Preservation Awards.

As laughter and conversation filled the air, the room at the OCC grew quiet as Pete Linkins was recognized for his historic preservation of his Oxford home. There is a long and beautiful story around the restoration of his home, now on Market street. Doug Hanks would have greatly appreciated Pete’s being awarded. Congratulations, Pete.

The drumroll continued as Cathy Schmidt was brought forward to be awarded her due. A virtual book of recommendations was written for Cathy and how appropriate as she is a beautiful writer of books about our town of Oxford. Douglas Hanks can cheerfully look down upon his apparent descendant and smile. Congratulations, Cathy.

What a joyful night. To those that attended, you already know. To those that missed it, all it takes is becoming a member and you can be there next year, and at all of our events. We had the best time with the best food and the skies were loudly cheering us on. That storm gave the atmosphere of the party that much more thunder!
