Artspace exists to inspire creative energy by engaging and educating all in the community about the creative process. Artspace believes in supporting the careers and development of artists of all levels by providing time and space to work, the opportunity to engage with other artists locally and outside of the community, exposure to the community through exhibiting their work, and professional dev

elopment opportunities. Artspace serves the public by introducing them to diverse artistic styles from artists both inside and outside of the area and by further educating them regarding the creative process. We believe in creating avenues whereby the public and artists can come together to engender a better understanding and commitment to the visual arts. At Artspace we host an environment in which artists of all levels and ages can learn and exchange ideas. Whatever boundaries one may face to experiencing the creative process (the stigma of elitism, expensive classes, physical disabilities, etc), Artspace breaks down those barriers by being accessible and real. We believe that nourishing the soul is vitally important to our community’s well-being. We would be remiss if we did not reach out to everyone in the community as we seek to improve the community as a whole. By bringing free art programming to children and adults where they live and play, we are breaking down the barriers of cost and transportation that may hinder many economically-disadvantaged families from participating in arts education. Artspace challenges members of our community to appreciate and learn from art, to express themselves, and to positively engage in and influence their surroundings. By doing so, we hope to create leaders of tomorrow that will follow their intuition and inspire others to think creatively to address community issues.

We asked our artists in residence how they balance it all and their advice for emerging artists. Here's what Adrianne had to say!

🎨 ADRIANNE HUANG works across painting, drawing, and book arts to navigate ambiguity and complex emotional states. She is based in the Triangle and has exhibited work throughout the state and nationwide. With an educational background in Information Science, she is interested in the dissonance between the human compulsion towards definitive answers and the uncertainty and impermanence of nature. Stranger than life but more familiar than fantasy, her images serve as wish fulfillment, dream diary, self-critique, and catalog of curiosity.

🎨 LAMAR WHIDBEE, born and raised in Hertford, North Carolina, is an interdisciplinary artist and licensed clinical mental health counselor whose practice bridges visual art and therapeutic inquiry. After beginning his journey as a collegiate football player at Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina Central University, he shifted toward creative work, ultimately earning his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his LCMHCA from NC State University. https://buff.ly/ZmpFxlI

Meet Artspace's 2026 Universal Access Artist in Residence — Connie Sales! https://buff.ly/BlIEIO2

About Connie: CONNIE SALES is an artist, poet, and advocate living with Neuromyelitis Optica, a rare autoimmune disease affecting her optic nerves and spinal cord. They paint both using their eyes through eye gaze technology and also with their mouth, holding the pen or brush, mixing both digital and traditional mediums. Most recently, they use MouthPad technology, turning their tongue into their brush and the roof of their mouth a trackpad.

Exhibited and collected nationally and internationally, in 2019, Microsoft visited her studio, and in 2022, through the Lunar Codex project, images of her art and a video of her demonstrating painting with her eyes, headed to the moon. They are inspired by how art holds space to receive, absorb, and uncover suffering, joy, and community; all while discovering a capacity for safety and grace.

Connie will be taking over our Upfront Gallery for the month of June, creating new work and interacting with visitors to share her process. She will also host an exhibition in the Upfront Gallery, July 2-August 2.

About the residency: Initiated in 2018, the Universal Access Artist Residency is for artists who identify as having a disability. This month-long residency provides funding, studio space, and professional support for a national artist to produce a solo exhibition immediately following the residency at Artspace.
