June 1890:
Downing Vaux, the son of Central Park designer Calvert Vaux, is hired to design the Gate Lodge at Wilderstein.
The simple, shingle-style gate lodge is a two-story residence for the estate caretaker, located on Morton Road just northwest of the mansion. The lodge's first resident is Charles Halley.
Today, the Gate Lodge is a bit larger, with several additions since it was designed and built. The Gate Lodge currently serves as the location for Wilderstein Historic Site's office and site of many of our public programs.
