On January 22, 1862, the newly repaired levee along the American River, which was originally breached on January 9th, gave way again at 28th Street near Rabel’s Tannery. The breach at the levee was initially 30 feet wide in the morning, but the levee washed off so rapidly that the breach had attained a width of about 150 feet by the afternoon, according to the Sacramento Daily Union newspaper.

The California State Legislature voted on this day as well to relocate and finish the legislative session in San Francisco and the Merchants’ Exchange Building served as the temporary Capitol building until the end of the year.
