Enjoy the opportunity to meet our guest artist, Shaun Doll, and discuss with him his current show. The works on display have emerged from a language that no longer belongs to anyone but him. Working with the coded marks of hobo symbols—an improvised communication system built from necessity, Shaun’s works, over time, have evolved into gestures of their own, becoming an abstract vocabulary that carries the residue of their origins but speaks differently now. Invented symbols coexist with fragments of recognizable imagery that mirror the tension between legibility and mystery, message and meaning. Each work becomes a search for connection through signs that can’t quite be read, but can still be felt.

Introducing one of our new resident artists, Joann Wadge: The Alchemy of Clay is a quiet ritual of metamorphosis, where raw earth is refined by the rhythm of the hand and subjected to the fire of the kiln. In this collection, I explore the transformative process of turning earth-bound clay into organic forms that echo the natural world. My work is a dialogue between the structured geometry of a flat clay slab and the unpredictable fluidity of hand building. I allow the slabs to retain their organic memory—revealing soft undulating curves, raw, textured edges, and a gentle tension that mirrors natural landscapes. This body of work is a celebration of the elemental shift from soft, wet mud to a permanent, resonant ceramic. These pieces are intended to bring a sense of geological time, quiet contemplation, and natural beauty.

ART IN A POEM March 5 - 28

Throughout history, visual art and works of poetry and literature have been tied together to build on the power of both mediums to communicate. This year, Studio 103 is honored to collaborate with poet and writer, Ann Spiers. Ann offered her poem “Enso: Open, Closed” from her recent publication “Wild Cucumber,” and over 27 artists responded with their visual responses to this evocative poem. The public is invited to vote for their favorite for the People’s Choice Award - one of three cash awards to be presented during our Second Saturdays Artist Reception and poetry reading. We hope you can join as at one or both of these events.
