The University of Arizona didn't mince words. The dean of students called the number and severity of the cases "egregious."

Back in August, the university president personally told chapter leaders to get their members in line.

"Despite the president's expectations," her letter says, "here we are."

One chapter was already suspended last month over hazing in which new members were allegedly forced to consume large amounts of alcohol and live goldfish.

This isn't an Arizona problem. Clearly.

Nick Syrett, a University of Wisconsin professor who wrote a history of white college fraternities, told TIME that research shows fraternity men are more likely to commit sexual assault and to haze than men who don't join.

The pattern is real.

He thinks that without fraternities, we'd see fewer cases of "a group of men together" planning a sexual assault, which is exactly what happened to Jane Doe at Cornell.

So why are they still here?

Fraternity alumni donate more, and universities don't like upsetting generous, powerful donors.

Important to note: historically Black fraternities and sororities, the Divine Nine, were founded because Black students were shut out of white Greek life. Researchers consistently find they aren't where this problem lives.

This is about a specific culture of secrecy, hazing and closing ranks.

Universities keep warning, reviewing and promising change.
Arizona managed to hit pause.
More schools should ask themselves what, exactly, they're protecting.
