Moccasin makeover! These Osage boy’s moccasins were in dire need of some cleaning, bead stabilization, and reshaping in preparation for going on display in our new galleries next year. Our summer graduate intern in objects conservation, Melina Edic, took on the challenge and now they’re looking refreshed and ready for display!

- Photo 3: Moccasins taking a sauna break in the humidification chamber.
- Photo 4: After humidification, supports, clamps, and magnets were used to hold the moccasins in the desired shape while they dried.

Gilcrease Museum is looking for a Public Relations Coordinator to join our team in Tulsa.

You'll draft press releases, coordinate media and interviews, plan events and exhibition openings, write newsletters and web copy, and help tell Gilcrease's story to the community and beyond.

We're looking for a strong writer and communicator who's organized, collaborative, and comfortable representing Gilcrease at public events. Bachelor's degree + 3 years in PR/communications required; museum or nonprofit experience a plus.

Earlier this week, we brought a piece of Gilcrease to Mayor Nichols’ office, sharing a look at our community-curated exhibit and the story behind it.🎨

The Mayor talked with us about the value of community-led curation, what Gilcrease means to Tulsa, and named his favorite piece from the exhibit: James Walker’s Wild Horses.

In a museum, cleaning vintage clothes is a bit more complicated than just throwing them in a washing machine! This huipil, a girl’s embroidered shirt from Guerrero, Mexico, was stained and the cotton fibers had yellowed with age (Photo 1). This summer, graduate intern in conservation, Melina Edic, was tasked with giving the huipil a refresh before it goes on display next year. Localized washing using gentle cleaning solutions and suction allowed the stains to be carefully reduced without damaging the huipil’s beautiful embroidery (Photo 2). Additionally, she patched a tear near the hem with layers of dyed silk tulle (Photos 3 and 4). The end result highlights the beautiful craftsmanship of this huipil (Photo 5)

Meet "Lollygagging Around," one of our newest acquisitions! This piece comes from Muscogee-Creek artist George Alexander aka Ofuskie 🎨

Raised in Mason, Oklahoma, Ofuskie has built a name for himself by blending realism with surrealist symbolism, using recurring motifs like his signature astronaut to explore identity, time, and humanity. His work has landed him a spot in the National Gallery of Art's The Land Carries Our Ancestors exhibition and recognition as one of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development's 40 Under 40. We're excited to add his work to the Gilcrease collection!
