“Praying Mantis” (with decapitated head storage)
Hand-painted, 3D-printed resin (edition 1 of 3)
4.25” x 3” x 2.5”
$1,300

This work is part of Shawn Smith’s “Prepping for the Void Series” on view in “Entangled Ecologies” at 108|Contemporary.

In a typical summer month, 6 billion insects fly over your head. Wind and air currents disperse insects to great distances. Since 1926, scientists have been using airplanes to collect insects as high as 19,000 feet.

For this series, Prepping for the Void, I imagined creating space suits to help the insects survive their journey. I took the artistic liberty of including two arthropods that are technically not insects but belong to the same phylum.

NIMBY stands for “Not in My Back Yard.” It refers to a 70’s mentality about the implementation of large scale beneficial municipal projects like power plants, prisons, and landfills. Most people want these types of entities, but not anywhere near them or their families.

People love pollinators. We champion them. We understand how important they are. But we literally don’t want bees and wasps in our house or in our backyard.

"The Stain of Extravagance"
Lithograph on laser-cut, hand-stitched linen, using ink made of cochineal beetles
23” x 22” x 14”
$6,000

This object highlights the history of the conquistadors transporting large amounts of these tiny cochineal beetles from Central Mexico back to Spain to create reds in various trades. The cochineal beetle was one of the most prized imports in Spain at the time, just behind gold and silver. The object is made in the style of the 16th century ruff.
