Join us this morning Saturday, October 24th, at 11am at the Williamstown Historical Museum for a lecture by local author Molly Rideout exploring the life and legacy of Grace Greylock Niles.

Grace Greylock Niles (1864-1943) has been both praised and mocked, called brilliant and called crazy. Born near the border between Williamstown and Pownal and often moving between both towns, Grace was an artist, a nurse, a botanist and a local historian who fought to maintain her independence as an unattached woman living with schizophrenia.

In this talk, local author Molly Rideout examines new research to understand the ways Grace fought for this freedom despite a range of injustices, including a possible framing by a wealthy Williamstown man that resulted in her involuntarily committal to the Brattleboro Retreat for the final 20 years of her life. Rideout will read from her forthcoming essay, “Bog Hag” and share both the known and previously unknown stories of the woman whom the Banner called, “the most talented person native to this small Vermont town."

Molly Rideout is a writer, bookmaker, local history researcher, and public artist dedicated to telling the stories of forgotten rural people. Originally from the Midwest, she now lives in the Berkshires, where she works for the nonprofit Assets for Artists.

Join us on Saturday, September 12th at 7:30pm at the Williamstown Historical Museum for an evening of astronomy with the Northern Berkshire Astronomical Society! Northern Berkshire Astronomical Society member Dr. Bob Donahue will present a lecture on the remarkable discoveries made over the past 30 years in the study of exoplanets: planets orbiting stars beyond our Solar System. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A and, weather permitting, a stargazing session.

Since the 1990s, astronomers have confirmed more than 6,000 exoplanets. What are these distant worlds like? Are any of them like Earth? Is our Solar System unusual? And what are we likely to learn next?

Come learn more about the worlds beyond our Solar System and join members of the Northern Berkshire Astronomical Society for an opportunity to explore the night sky.

Join us on Friday, August 14th for Five Pound Horse! Suggested donation $15/person $30/family, cash or card at the door! Doors open at 6:30, music starts at 7pm.

5 Pound Horse has created a regional and international buzz around electric live performances where anything’s on the table — French-language songs, banjos, marimbas, melodies from Africa and Ireland and anywhere else they draw inspiration. They’ve graced Berkshires institutions like The Dream Away Lodge and MASS MoCA’s FreshGrass Festival, appeared at Pittsburgh venues like the Thunderbird Music Hall and James Simon’s sculpture studio Pittsburgh PA, and thrown legendary parties at their home BarN in Williamstown, MA. They toured Europe in 2024 playing as The Durgas and 5 Pound Horse combined into one group. The band are poised to record their first EP with producer Ronan Chris Murphy (King Crimson, etc). Heart-stirring, original, and epiphany-inducing, 5 Pound Horse is ready to ride into a town near you for a night to remember. Saddle up!
