Kaleideum was formed by the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks on July 1, 2016. Kaleideum Downtown (formerly the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem) was founded by the Junior League of Winston-Salem and opened its doors on November 20, 2004. Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks) was founded by the Junior League of Winston-Salem and opened its doors as the Nature Science Ce

nter in 1964. The two museums began talks of a possible collaboration in early 2015, with a new mission of “Inspiring wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery.” The merged entity combines the features of both museums – blending arts, literacy, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) orientations into an integrated approach to learning.

CALLING ALL NERDS.

Science nerds. History nerds. Pop culture nerds. Theater nerds. Technology nerds. Curious people who just like learning weird and wonderful things.

Join us for the inaugural Nerd Nite at Kaleideum on Friday, June 5 at 6 pm for an evening of fascinating talks, great conversation, and a cash bar.

This month's lineup includes:

🎓 Karrie Adams — "Not That Kind of Doctor: Country Roots, Classroom Creds, and Why I Still Belong"

🎛️ Dean Wilcox — "Malfunction Junction, What's Your Function? Ruminating on Glitch and Circuit Bending"

🧟 Jamie Ryan — "Universal Monsters v. Fiction (aka, For the Last Time: Frankenstein is the Scientist, Not the Creation, Dammit!)"

From regenerative medicine and educational journeys to intentionally broken electronics and classic movie monsters, you'll leave knowing something you didn't know before.

Nerd Nite is a global phenomenon held in more than 100 cities around the world, and now it's coming to downtown Winston-Salem. Come grab a drink, learn something unexpected, and spend an evening celebrating curiosity.

Friday, June 5 • 6 pm. Cash bar available. $10 online; $12 at the door. Members $5 online; $6 at the door.

A Milestone Year. A Community Connected.

Our 2024–25 Impact Report has just been published, and as we look back on Kaleideum’s first full year in our new downtown home, one thing stands out clearly: this museum belongs to the community.

Over the past year, Kaleideum welcomed 214,952 visits from children, families, educators, teens, older adults, and lifelong learners from across our region. Together, we served 214 schools, welcomed more than 21,000 students through field trips, expanded access programs for families, and continued growing opportunities in robotics, invention education, sensory-friendly programming, camps, community partnerships, and hands-on learning experiences for all ages.

What happens at Kaleideum reaches far beyond a day at the museum. Every day, we see children building confidence, families learning together, students discovering new possibilities, teens developing workforce-ready skills, and community members finding connection through shared experiences.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this milestone year possible — our members, guests, educators, volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters.
