READ Books is pleased to announce the launch of Manga Matrix a comic/manga artist book by Dan Starling, with contributions from Steffanie Ling, Deanna Li, Wake Cook, Siqi Yang, Tajliya Jamal, Natalia Soto, and Kobie Gingras-Fox. The book is risograph printed by Moniker Press.

Manga Matrix is inspired by the need for new post-colonial and post-patriarchal narratives that break with the conventions of storytelling in popular media and propose a new way to imagine ourselves individually and collectively. The starting point for the work is the narrative story arc of the heroโ€™s journey and its persistent use in popular culture. To overcome this simplistic yet stubborn mythology, Manga Matrix seeks to maintain a state of tension in which conflict doesnโ€™t resolve in an overly simplistic manner, realist conventions donโ€™t suppress artifice, actions do not flow seamlessly, and interruption is the norm. The โ€œconclusionโ€ of the book consists of a series of lithographic prints that begin as representations but progressively become more and more layered with abstract images, obliterating the narrative and eventually becoming saturated with black ink so that the heroโ€™s journey โ€œstops being writtenโ€.

The artist book ๐˜–๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด ๐˜‹๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏโ€™๐˜ต ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ต ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฏ๐˜บ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ is part of an installation work of Hong-Kaiโ€™s work included in the exhibition A Call of All Beings: See you tomorrow, same time, same place that was presented at the Taichung Art Museum from December 13, 2025 โ€“ April 12, 2026. The exhibition is jointly curated by the Taichung Art Museum curatorial team, Ling-Chih Chou, Alaina Claire Feldman, and Anca Mihuleลฃ-Kim. Wangโ€™s work will be featured as part of an exhibition at the Libby Leshgold Gallery in 2026.
This publication takes as its point of departure the moral ballad The Great Battle Between the Fly and the Mosquito to reorient our comprehension of human and other-than-human relations, and practices of listening. While fables and folk tales often end with a clear caution or lesson, The Great Battle Between the Fly and Mosquito is distinct in that its delivery and message remains contingent on the time and the environment of transmission and reception. How do the conditions for listening determine how we comprehend these songs and stories?
This publication includes contributions by writersโ€”Haytham el-Wardany, Phoebe Giannisi, Gavin Steingo, and Matariki Williams. Their writing, thinking, and ways of being in the world offer us different paths of possibility as they shape our attention to, and consciousness of, listening practices in critical and expansive ways.

Join us for the launch of Half-Light: Notes on Violence from the Trans Underworld, with artist-researcher and writer Kitt Peacock. The event will combine a short talk and readings from the book with a drop-in social practice activity from the Centre for Near Life Research.

Half-light collects outcomes from a two year long performance and image-making project through the Centre for Near Life Research.

Kitt Peacock is an artist-researcher from Oโ€™odham Jeweแธ (Arizona), currently working on the unceded territories of the xสทmษ™ฮธkสทษ™yฬ“ษ™m, Sแธตwxฬฑwรบ7mesh, and sษ™lilwษ™taษฌ nations. Their practice is centred around the creation and maintenance of trans worlds and considers how violent conditions can be redeployed as the very material of trans life. Peacockโ€™s current work with the Centre for Near Life Research forges alliances with non-living relationsโ€”contaminated waterways, lethal algae blooms, and sites of harmโ€”in order to discover new strategies of q***r resistance.

They hold an MFA in Visual Art from the University of British Columbia (2024). Their work, which bridges social practice, installation, and artist publishing, has appeared at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (Los Angeles), the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and the 2024 Dakar Biennale.
