🎉 We're thrilled to be part of the West Midlands Heritage Futures Event 2026!

Come and say hello to the Coffin Works team! Meet some of our fantastic volunteers and find out what it's really like to volunteer at our unique museum. Discover the skills and experience you can gain, the chance to be part of a team and how volunteering can open doors to opportunities in the heritage sector and beyond.

The event will also bring together a wide range of heritage organisations from across the West Midlands, with talks from industry professionals and the chance to explore the many different pathways into heritage careers. Whether you're considering a future in the sector, looking for volunteering opportunities, or simply curious to learn more, there's something for everyone!

A link to Birmingham

Dave, one of our volunteers talks about the Bakerlite telephone in the office of Joyce Green.

It’s more than a telephone, in itself, it’s a testimonial to Birmingham’s industrial and manufacturing history. Made in Tysley, Birmingham and common place in every office across the city.

At the Coffin Works, it was connected to one of the cities first answer phones to record orders for our funeral furniture.

You can see the phone as part of your visit to our award winning attraction.

Our tea list in the Shroud Room always sparks a debate, which if our workers do you most identify with?

At Newman Brothers, we take our tea seriously. In fact, the staff walked out on strike when their tea breaks were shortened.

Tea is still an important feature of the Coffin Works and we have hot drinks and assortment of cakes available in our cafe.

Going underground?

There were a few lucky folk who had spaces reserved for them in the nuclear bunker under a Birmingham.

Historian Kevin Thomas, will be discussing the nuclear bunker as part of his thrilling talk Life and Death in Birmingham.

The experience includes; a sample tour of the stamp room, the talk by Kevin and cream tea.

WE NEED YOU! 👋

We’re looking for some brilliant new volunteers to join our team at the Coffin Works. ⚰️

During the week, we’re looking for Tour Guides to help bring the fascinating story of our historic museum to life for visitors.

At weekends, we’re looking for:

👋☕ Welcome & Refreshment Volunteers – greeting visitors, helping them feel at home and keeping them suitably refreshed

🏛️ Room Enablers – helping visitors explore our historic rooms and discover more about the collection

You don’t need to be a history expert. What matters most is being friendly, enthusiastic and willing to get stuck in.

You’ll become part of a wonderfully quirky team, meet lots of interesting people and spend time in one of Birmingham’s most unusual historic buildings.

Our volunteers deserve a day out too! ❤️

We’re incredibly lucky to have such a brilliant team of volunteers at the Coffin Works, so we like to show them how much we appreciate them with regular adventures to other heritage sites.

Our latest trip took us to Moor Pool, where we were treated to a fascinating guided walk exploring the history of this unique historic garden suburb.

And then came the really important part… 🎳

We headed into the historic skittles alley for a few rounds of skittles!

A brilliant day of history, heritage, plenty of laughs and some very questionable skittles skills. 😂

A huge thank you to the team at Moor Pool for looking after us so well and giving our volunteers such a fantastic day out.

We might be biased, but we think our volunteers are pretty special. ❤️
