🥳 Last Thursday we celebrated Councillor Phil Davis’ retirement, a fitting send off for someone who’s given so much to our city.

🏆 For over 15 years, Phil has been a true heritage champion, always fighting for the places and stories that make Birmingham what it is. From supporting Birmingham Heritage Week to chairing the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust andHeritage Strategy Group, his impact is everywhere.

Phil has always championed heritage and conservation and he’s given our sector a voice. But more than that, his friendly and approachable nature has helped bridge the world of local politics for small organisations like ourselves, ensuring our voices were always heard.

🍾🎉 Happy retirement, Phil!

Death in Birmingham used to be much more colourful…

When people think about Victorian funerals, they often imagine black fabric and sombre colours.

But at Newman Brothers, funeral furnishings and shrouds were sometimes made in a surprising range of colours including shades linked to Birmingham’s local football teams ⚽

Our wonderful volunteer Mads shares how colour played a much bigger role in mourning traditions than many people realise.

Did this surprise you?

You can now take a little piece of the Coffin Works home with you…

Museums are built on stories but also on the people who care about them.

One of our wonderful volunteers created this stunning watercolour of the Coffin Works, and we loved it so much that we turned it into a collection for the shop ✨

You can now find the artwork as a:
💙 Card
💙 Magnet
💙 Coaster

A lovely way to remember your visit or send a little piece of Birmingham history to someone else.

Happy Deaf Awareness Week 2026 💙

At the Coffin Works, we know a thing or two about hand and eye coordination (due to spinning fly presses) … so this week the team swapped drop stamping for having a go at some BSL! 👐
